“Create a New Country in Time” – Serena Williams’ Husband Alexis Ohanian Once Hailed Soccer Fans’ Creative Effort for 2026 FIFA World Cup

Since becoming an investor in the women’s soccer club Angel City FC, Alexis Ohanian – husband of legendary tennis player Serena Williams – has been involved in the world of soccer. Alexis Ohanian is the co-founder of Reddit. He is a businessman, and entrepreneur and has invested in various businesses.

In 2020, Ohanian with the aim of uplifting women’s soccer became an investor in Angel City FC. He has used his platform and has been a constant spokesperson for women’s soccer. But before that, in 2017, Ohanian commended the creative efforts of soccer fans on Reddit.

Alexis Ohanian hailed soccer fans’ creative effort

As we all know Reddit is a place where people share their thoughts and ideas for other people to see. But soccer fans had some creative ideas. One fan made a custom soccer kit with the Reddit logo on it. Alexis Ohanian was quick to notice and commend the fans. He jokingly said, “Looks like reddit.com/r/soccer/ getting ready to create a new country in time for the 2026 World Cup.” 

Of course, with the 2026 World Cup set to take place in the United States, there won’t be any need for a new country. However, fans will be excited nonetheless for the opportunity to see the tournament in person.

How Serena Williams made her husband Ohanian invest in ACFC

It all started with a conversation during the 2019 Women’s World Cup final. Ohanian was watching the game with his wife and daughter when he made a casual comment “Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if she played for the women’s national team one day?”

Williams quickly shut down the idea, saying “Not until they pay her what she’s worth”. Ohanian was taken aback by his wife’s response and said ” ‘Alright, challenge accepted”. And in 2020 Alexis Ohanian made an investment in the newly founded Angel City Football Club.

The aim is to promote women’s soccer and provide them with the pay that these women soccer players deserve. Angel City quickly became one of the most successful women’s professional soccer teams in the United States. It is proof that Ohanian’s bet with Serena Williams was a wise one.
