Think of all the goalkeepers in the women’s game, including Nadine Angerer of Germany, who led the German team to back-to-back victories at the 2003 and 2007 World Cups. The fearless Bente Nordby of Norway dominated the game between the sticks. Yet, none comes close to Hope Solo‘s influence on women’s soccer. The sensational goalkeeper is known for her shot-stopping abilities, revolutionizing the goalkeeping position. And now, she has a documentary out on Netflix.

The Netflix docuseries ‘Untold‘ is a collection of stories from the sports world and this time the spotlight shines brightly on Hope Solo. She is one of the best goalkeepers in the world but is often caught in trouble for various issues. Although we hear her name in almost all controversies, we have never heard it from her perspective. Moreover, there is a sense of disbelief in some of her explanations.

After the 2016 Rio Olympics, all hell broke loose for the player who called the Sweden women’s soccer team “a bunch of cowards.” For that comment, she was terminated by the U.S. Soccer Federation. Deep down in a dark place, Solo detailed how no one supported her. She mentioned, “And I don’t hear from my teammates, coaches, anybody. I’ve won tournaments with these women. We’ve had each other’s backs. We’ve seen each other go through ups and downs, the deaths of family members.”

She continued, “We’ve been there, living, eating, breathing together, for years. So I think these women are cowardly and controlled by the federation. I was hurt and I felt betrayed by a lot of people. I don’t think people knew how…how dark of a time it was for me.”

Hope Solo became troubled with no support from teammates!

After she stated this, in the docuseries, they mentioned the players who did not want to make an appearance in the docuseries. Some are Megan Rapinoe, Mia Hamm, Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd, Abby Wambach, and many more. Therefore, it became evident there was a lot of bad blood between Solo and the other players.

Likewise, it’s not the first time she called out soccer players. In the 2007 World Cup, as shown extensively in the documentary, Solo led the way as the team goalkeeper until the semi-final, when coach Greg Ryan dropped her. It turned into a circus. As Brianna Scurry headed to the World Cup in one of her last tournaments, she received the nod. But, Brazil defeated the USWNT 4-0 to advance to the next round. The fallout of this made the headlines.
