Ever since Lionel Messi set foot in the MLS, Inter Miami’s fortunes have witnessed a landmark change. Before Messi made his Inter Miami debut, the Herons were at the bottom of the league and ranked last for all underlying attacking metrics. However, since La Pulga’s arrival, the David Beckham-owned side hasn’t lost a single match. Moreover, they have already won the Leagues Cup and are in the finals of the US Open Cup. This impact by Messi has been incredible, to say the least.
However, Messi’s real test lies in the MLS. As we are about to enter the new season, former Liverpool player and ESPN pundit Steve Nicol made a bold claim about Inter Miami. As per the Scottishman, based on previous season’s evidence, the Herons cannot “score a goal” if Leo doesn’t play. Safe to say, this comment has irked many Miami fans.

Earlier today, the ESPN FC panel, including Ale Moreno, Steve Nicol, and Jurgen Klinsmann, came together to discuss the much-awaited debut of Leo Messi. The central question at hand was whether La Pulga could lead the 15th-seeded Miami team to the playoffs. Kicking off the dialogue, Liverpool icon Steve Legend offered a striking viewpoint. He indicated that, apart from the ex-Barcelona recruits, the rest of Inter Miami lacks the pedigree to secure wins on their own.
“It’s not about Messi and Busquets, and Jordi Alba in my opinion. Can the rest of them around them sustain it for another 14 games?” questioned the Scottishman. He then compared Miami’s performances from the past to prove his point.
“They’ve been carried along with all this, but there’s a reason why those guys couldn’t score a goal, couldn’t win a game, couldn’t make a tackle, couldn’t do anything before Messi and his two Pals arrived, right?” boldly opined the ESPN panelist.
Interestingly; Steve Nicol’s comments are coming a few days after Miami’s breakout star’ Robert Taylor credited Lionel Messi for the team’s attacking returns.

After lifting the Leagues Cup under dramatic circumstances, Robert Taylor made an appearance at the popular podcast show “Offside with Twellman”. In the chat show, the Finnish International player was quipped about the secret behind his Miami’s astronomical improvement in attacking returns. As expected, the 28-year-old cited Messi as the reason, who has scored 10 goals in 7 appearances already!
“I mean, I wouldn’t say I am a breakout star or anything,” remarked Taylor on being called the surprise package of the season. “I honestly think we improved as a team because of the new signings so much that they bring the best out of everyone. When you play with Messi attacking, you are going to get chances; you just have to take them away,” said the 28-year-old on why Miami has been generating more goals.
