For many young players, wearing their nation’s colors on the pitch is a dream come true. While many don’t have a choice in which country they represent, that wasn’t the case for Lily Yohannes. Born in the United States, she began her career at Ajax in the Netherlands and was eligible to play for either country. When she chose to represent Emma Hayes’ side, it didn’t sit well with Dutch coach Andries Jonker.

Having attended both Dutch and American underage camps, Yohannes ultimately chose to represent the USWNT. At just 16, she became the youngest player to be called up to the senior squad since Sophia Smith. This decision came as a surprise to the Dutch, especially as coach Andries Jonker had been publicly pursuing Yohannes for over a year. First of all, I read that she dreams of playing in an American shirt her whole life, She could have said that right away. It would have saved Nigel a lot of work.” said the Dutch coach at a pre-match media conference.

Nigel De Jong, the current technical director of the KNVB (National Dutch Football Federation), who also had an Ajax connection (ex-player) with Yohannes was confident of signing the youngster. I think she should do what she wants to do. If that’s her dream, she should pursue it and live it. I don’t want a player who would rather play in another shirt.” said Jonker. Despite all the commotion, she made an immediate impact on her USWNT debut, becoming the third-youngest goal scorer in history.

With Emma Hayes resting key players for the friendlies, Yohannes may get a chance to get her second cap against the Netherlands. The 17-year-old was on the bench for the friendly against England at Wembley, and perhaps the final match before the international break will be her chance to shine.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Yohannes revealed the welcoming environment within the USWNT camp played a significant role in her decision. “This is an environment of amazing players, but also really amazing people. So, to come into camp and be welcomed by everybody was very nice,” said Yohannes.

Surely she had a fair share of ‘Triple Espresso’ during her time with the US camp. With her immense potential, Yohannes will likely link up with the likes of Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman, and Mallory Swanson, a sight that will be terrifying for their opponents.

However, for the final friendly, all three of Hayes’ key players will be rested. After the 0-0 draw at Wembley, the ex-Chelsea boss called for more from her players, and Yohannes could be the key to her solutions. It will be a golden opportunity for the 17-year-old to shine against the country she calls home.
