Earlier today, Lionel Messi made history by helping Inter Miami lift their maiden Leagues Cup. Interestingly, this is also the first-ever trophy in the history of the club. However, what made this win sweeter was the fact that it was won against Giannis Antetokounmpo-owned Nashville FC. Just before the onset of the match, the NBA star was part of the pre-match ceremony. During the proceedings, the Bucks star was challenged to score a goal from the middle of the pitch.
Upon successfully finding the back of the net, the NBA icon performed Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic ‘Siu’ celebration taunting Messi. But as luck would have it, La Pulga’s heroics helped Miami win the title, which made Giannis take to ‘X, formerly Twitter’ and acknowledge the 7x Ballon d’Or winner’s greatness.

Lionel Messi started the League Cup final in a typical fashion as he scored his 10th goal in 7 consecutive matches. Despite a bright start, Nashville made a stunning comeback to level things and take the game to Extra Time. Eventually, the game had to be settled by a penalty shootout which was won 10-9 by Miami.
This Messi-led performance stunned Giannis forcing him to take to ‘X’ and post a symbolic apology for taunting the 7-time Ballon d’Or winner. He took to ‘X’ and said “Messi. Respect [prayer hand emojis]”. This tweet has gone viral ever since with quite a handful of fans poking fun at the NBA star.
Messi. Respect 🙏🏾🙏🏾

While the majority of fans poked fun at the Bucks talisman for trolling Messi, a few sections of fans looked at the brighter side. These fans were simply excited that Giannis was paying respect to their soccer idol.

Even as a part owner of Nashville, the opposing team in the finals, you still acknowledged Messi’s greatest!
Good sportmanship! 👑

Meanwhile, there was one fan who possibly pitched one of the craziest ideas in recent memory. He asked Giannis to get CR7 in Nashville to get revenge on La Pulga & Co.
Bring cristiano ronaldo to mls my brother, so nashville can get their revenge. 🙏

Giannis tried taunting Messi and he failed. But he isn’t the only one who failed with his prediction. MLS Season Pass Analyst and Ex USMNT icon Sacha Kljestan also went against Leo in his pre-match prediction for the winner.

A couple of days ago, the official MLS website posted a prediction list by their esteemed panel of analysts. Out of the 9 predictions, a whopping 7 predicted Miami to lift their maiden trophy. The only ones in denial of Messi mania were Sacha Kljestan and MLS content producer Jonathan Sigal. The former USMNT icon betted on Nashville’s defensive prowess to stop Messi & Co. He expected the Tennesse-based side’s discipline to overcome the sheer talent Miami possesses.
“I picked Nashville to win the tournament before it started and I’m sticking to it. I can’t believe I’m betting against Messi, but Nashville will stick to their game plan of being organized defensively and capitalize on counterattacks and set pieces. Messi scores, but suffers his first defeat in an Inter Miami jersey. 2-1 Nashville,” Kljestan had predictied.

But as is the norm, every Messi doubter in the history of the sport has frequently been proven wrong. Giannis and Sacha might have tried to break the chain but they ended up being just another name in the list. Congratulations Leo for your maiden Leagues Cup trophy. Truly the Greatest!
