Since 1940, Argentinian club giants Boca Juniors have used the La Bombonera stadium as their home stadium. The stadium has become a very important part of their history. However, it looks like their historic stadium is now in controversy. There was a report of an overcrowded stadium during the match between Argentina and Uruguay. So, acting on that media report, the local City government has decided to close the stadium. But, Boca immediately rejected the allegations.

They have also made a statement on the issue of the stadium. It has said, “Proud to have received the world champions at home in a festive atmosphere and with total normality, the Boca Juniors Athletic Club announces that, despite not having exceeded the maximum capacity of the stadium, the GCBA government control agency decided, finalized the meeting, the closure of La Bombonera for claiming that its capacity had been exceeded. Given the circumstances of the case, the club considers that this action shows animosity against the institution, something that has been suggestively reiterated on several occasions so far this year.

The stadium holds a lot of value for both the club and the country in terms of support from the fans. Hence, the club is very serious about the issue. They plan to contact higher authorities about the issue. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi’s statement after their loss against Uruguay has also grabbed attention.

The statement of Lionel Messi after the match makes the headlines

In the 20th minute of the match. Argentinian players including Lionel Messi got into a brawl with Uruguayan players. The star player Mathias Olivera made gestures that did not go well with Argentina’s team. In the end, they did beat Argentina 2-0 after goals from Ronald Araujo and Darwin Nunez. In the post-match interview, Messi was asked about the brawl. He had some strong words for his opponents.

The Inter Miami star said, “I prefer not to say what I think about some gestures, young people have to learn to respect their elders. Argentina – Uruguay was always a tough classic, but with respect, they have to learn a little”. It was surprising as Lionel Messi rarely makes such comments. It is clear that what Uruguay’s national team did during the match did not sit well with La Pulga and the rest of the team.
