The latest voice from a soccer analyst reflects the feelings of most American fans. The exclusion of Trinity Rodman from the US Women’s National Team POTY disappointed the presenter and analyst Lisa Carling. Despite having a decent season in the league this year, Carling advocated for Rodman’s nominations for other reasons.
The 21-year-old from California is deemed the next big thing in American soccer. To be able to win the POTY would have done wonders for her. Rodman’s performances for 2023, however, were not paid much heed.

There wasn’t a big change for Rodman this year. Even though it had not been a successful World Cup for the team, many still felt she had done her part despite the team’s failure. On Attacking Third, a sports podcast dedicated to USWNT, Lisa Carling stated, “It’s a big miss, frankly, in my opinion. She’s a young player, a forward for the United States, that led the team in goal contributions in 2023.”
“She was a game-changer for this US side, that made it impossible not to have Trinity Rodman on the pitch. This is a complete snub for US standards,” she further emphasized.
Rodman’s five goals and five assists for the national team were the reason for Carlin’s reproval. Additionally, the nomination would have boosted her morale feels the presenter. However, to her disappointment, the goals and assists she gave were mostly in international friendlies.
It was a sad year for the USWNT. One of its best players, Megan Rapinoe, retired from soccer. But the year was influenced by the World Cup, which forms the main criteria for most of the awards. The 2021 US Soccer Young Female POTY went blank in the World Cup with neither goals nor assists, allowing the board to choose others.

Stiff competition for the USWNT POTY Award
The list involves five US players, who had a great year despite the early World Cup exit. Crystal Dunn had an amazing year defensively, allowing just one goal and two shots on target in the WC. Other defenders were Emily Fox from North Carolina Courage and the unavoidable Naiomi Girma, who was already awarded the NWSL Defender of the Year award. But her performances, similar to Dunn’s at the World Cup, were a positive for the national team.

Lindsey Horan and Sophia Smith are the attackers selected. Horan scored 2 goals in the World Cup and 4 overall for the year. Smith, who was the only Ballon d’Or nominee from the US this year, scored two goals and an assist for her team. Even though Rodman may have felt left out, the five players had a better World Cup campaign, giving the voters a hard time choosing.
