Having played 0 minutes in the 2 matches before, Cole Palmer got his first taste of Euro 2024 against Slovenia yesterday. It’s safe to say that the Chelsea star grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Despite the disappointing draw, Palmer’s 20-minute cameo resulted in England’s best spell. As such, plenty of calls have been made for Gareth Southgate to start the midfielder in the knockout stages. Among his admirers is Roy Keane, who finds the midfielder an ‘amazing’ player. Will Southgate pay heed to his comments?
In the post-match interview, Cole Palmer was delighted with Roy Keane’s comments. He said, “It’s always nice to hear you know, especially someone like Roy who played internationally and for Manchester United.” But, as per the Chelsea star, the final decision lies with Gareth Southgate.
For the English manager, the big problem is scoring goals. Across the three matches so far, the Three Lions have scored just twice. This is where Cole Palmer can make a difference, according to Roy Keane.

The former Manchester United star said, “The one I am always excited to watch… I think Palmer certainly has that X-factor. Every time he gets the ball, you think something is going to happen. I do love Palmer, I think he’s an amazing player.” It’s safe to say that Roy Keane is a certified fan of the former Manchester City star. But not everyone wants to see the goal-scoring midfielder in the playing XI.

Rio Ferdinand prefers Anthony Gordon over Cole Palmer if England are to ‘play bold’
Just like Cole Palmer, another player who has been underutilized this tournament is Anthony Gordon. Despite having a stunning season with Newcastle United, the winger hasn’t started a game in Euro 2024. On the left flank, Gareth Southgate has preferred Phil Foden to Anthony Gordon. Yet, according to Roy Keane’s former teammate Rio Ferdinand, both soccer players should be in the playing XI. Interestingly, Rio added that Palmer won’t improve the XI. He explained, “I don’t want everyone coming to the ball.”
According to Rio Ferdinand, England has too many playmakers. Consequently, he believes that someone like Gordon, who works hard and constantly makes runs, would improve the team balance. For Ferdinand, the ideal attacking trio is Gordon and Saka on either side of Kane. In the midfield, he preferred Foden and Bellingham ahead of Rice. Like many ex-English stars, Ferdinand agreed that Trent Arnold is not the ideal choice for midfield.
