Is the media putting too much pressure on Pulisic and Turner, risking their USMNT careers?

Gregg Berhalter is the name dominating the headlines for the obvious reasons. The USMNT boss and his team aren’t being spared easily over their recent Copa America 2024 heartbreak, making his future uncertain. While players like Christian Pulisic and Matt Turner are being pressed to share their views on their coach, the media’s line of questioning perplexes former US international Clint Dempsey, believing that Berhalter’s players won’t provide a ‘truthful answer.’

Already, the players are trying to process their shocking exit within the tournament’s group stages. And on top of that, the MNT stars are being bombarded with questions regarding the future of Berhalter, something which may backfire on them. “I don’t understand why they keep asking the players what do they think about the manager,” Dempsey said on FOX broadcast.

“What player is gonna say? ‘No, we should get him out?’ No one is gonna do that. Are you gonna get called in the next game if you do? Probably not. So I don’t understand why they’re being asked these questions. They’re not gonna give you the truthful answer,” concluded the former USMNT captain.

It’s only logical to believe that hardly anyone would dare to say something against the 50-year-old manager until he is still in charge of the Star and Stripes. After all, the responses from players, including Pulisic and Turner, have only been positive. However, Dempsey rather wants the US Soccer Federation to make the tough call and relieve Berhalter from his duties, as he may not be the guy who suits this job.

The former Tottenham Hotspur striker further expressed his lack of confidence in Gregg Berhalter being the right man to lead Team USA for the 2026 World Cup. Clint Dempsey claims that even though the American boys managed to qualify for the World Cup, the progress has been stagnant since then.

“Where have we come since 2022? Where have we progressed? We haven’t. This is our Golden Generation, and it looks like we’re wasting it,” he said.

Dempsey asserted the team isn’t on the ‘right track’ under Berhalter. He even took a dig at the federation for wasting time by first sacking him and eventually bringing him back. The pundit made the USMNT realize there isn’t much time left for them for the next edition of the World Cup which again, they are hosting on their home soil.

Nevertheless, time for the USMNT to overcome their negatives if they wish to see Christian Pulisic and Co. ace the 2026 World Cup.
