Earlier this month, US Soccer was in the news every single day for the wrong reasons. It all started with the US Soccer board receiving an anonymous call during the FIFA World Cup. That person was willing to leak ‘sensitive’ information on Gregg Berhalter, the USMNT coach then. However, those people turned out to be Giovanni Reyna’s parents. His father Claudio Reyna was currently serving as the Sporting Director of Austin FC. Austin FC is a Texas-based soccer club owned by Matthew McConaughey.

In recent news, Claudio Reyna has stepped down from his position as the Sporting Director of Austin FC. However, the fans still cannot believe the amount of drama that happened earlier this January.
Has the ‘Berhalter-Reyna’ saga finally ended?
Former USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter came out clean to the entire soccer fanbase after the anonymous phone call. Berhalter released a public statement that explained the entire situation. The situation was about a bar fight that Berhalter had gotten into with his girlfriend in 1991. A few hours later, the soccer world shockingly discovered that it was Giovanni Reyna’s parents who leaked the information about Berhalter.

Many of the fans just called this a mockery of US Soccer. Quite a few fans were upset with the way everything has panned out. The reason is that the USMNT is still looking for a head coach and everything seems in a mess. Recently, American soccer fans slammed Gregg Berhalter on social media after Giovanni Reyna scored in back-to-back games for his club. The criticism came after Berhalter almost side-lined Giovanni Reyna during the World Cup.
Matthew McConaughey rightly predicted the rise of soccer in America!
Matthew McConaughey correctly predicted the rise of soccer in America during the World Cup. Austin FC’s co-owner was part of a ‘watch-along’ for a USMNT game on the ‘Men in Blazers’ channel. While watching the game, the Hollywood star spoke about the gradual development of the sport in America.

The Hollywood star said, “It’s moved up the pecking order where the youth are choosing to play the game. In most of the rest of the world… this is the game. It hasn’t been in America but we’re catching up and we’re putting a better product out there when this becomes the first and second choice of the youth in America, that’s when we start to see things…”.
Matthew McConaughey rightly said that the sport is currently catching up with other popular sports in the country. The real question is if soccer can actually take the place of the NBA or MLB in America.
