Marcus Rashford was a peripheral figure in the game against Newcastle United. Despite a no-show in front of goal, it was his work ethic that drew the ire of fans. Rashford’s reputation took a serious hit in the game yet manager Erik ten Hag insisted that he will keep supporting the Englishman. However, a pundit on ESPN does not believe this to be the way forward. In fact, he wants to see Rashford dropped for the Chelsea encounter.
The United forward was moved from his preferred leftwing position in favor of youngster Garnacho against Newcastle. With Antony available, it will be interesting to see if Erik ten Hag drops Rashford just like the pundit wants him to.

Shaka Hislop rates Rashford very highly. He said, “I think he’s an incredible talent arguably the most talented player in that Manchester United dressing room.” However, he did not enjoy Rashford’s performance against Newcastle. He explained, “You cannot have somebody even if it’s the most talented player in your dressing room strolling about the park like Marcus Rashford did against Newcastle.” Hence, Hislop wants the Dutch tactician to take a leaf out of how he dealt with Cristiano Ronaldo last season.
Ten Hag had issues with Ronaldo and even dropped him for a crucial encounter against Liverpool. The move paid off as they won 2-1. It seems Hislop believes Rashford should be dropped as well. He explained, “You have to leave him out otherwise you give everybody licensed to do similar (stroll around).”
It seems Erik ten Hag was also unimpressed by Rashford’s display as he was substituted in the 61st minute. With just 2 goals in 18 games, the Englishman has had a season to forget. Perhaps, he can follow Ronaldo’s example to turn his career around.

Should Rashford follow the Ronaldo route?
There are lots of parallels between Ronaldo’s last season at United and Rashford currently. In the 22/23 season, Ronaldo managed just 17 goals in 35 games, statistically one of his worst seasons ever. However, his first full season at Al Nassr has seen him roar back to form with 18 goals in 20 games.
In 22/23, Rashford had his best-ever season by recording 30 goals and 9 assists. However, this campaign is quite the opposite. With the emergence of Garancho and competition from the likes of Antony, perhaps a move away from Manchester might be the best choice for the winger.
