Wrexham is going up again! Having achieved promotion to League Two just a year ago, the Welsh side again managed to climb the ladder for the second consecutive time to reach League One. While every player deserved appreciation for their efforts, only two names were recognized during the EFL awards night, with Paul Mullin shockingly missing out. But more than the striker’s own faithful, the Championship side, Blackburn Rovers, was more surprised by the absence of the Wrexham star.

The Red Dragons’ executive director Humphrey Ker revealed in the latest Men in Blazers podcast who represented the club at the award show held last week. He narrated the never-heard hot gossip while seated next to Rovers’ table with individuals, including the club’s star player and Championship top scorer Sammie Szmodics, discussing Mullin’s exclusion from the League Two Player of the Season award, let alone his absence from the Team of the Season.

“When the nominees for League Two Player of the Season came up, I could hear all the people on the Blackburn table like ‘what? Where is Mullin? Why is Mullin not on that list?’ said Ker. The director insisted that Mullin was ‘division’s best striker,‘ even though he missed out on a few games. Awards are awards, and they’re not always the best barometer of who’s done what, but Paul’s contribution this season has, again, been… bananas, the amount of goals he’s scored in three seasons for us,” he added.

Notably, Blackburn Rovers ended Wrexham’s journey from this season’s FA Cup. Yet, the coincidence lies because the league stakeholders surprised them by not acknowledging Paul Mullin for his hard work. So, who took the place instead of him?

Despite Paul Mullin missing out, two Wrexham stars shine at EFL awards night

In the recently announced League Two best eleven, Wrexham midfielder Elliot Lee and goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo managed to make the cut. Macaulay Langstaff of Notts County and Matt Smith from Salford City took Paul Mullin’s position. Certainly, Mullin might feel a bit unlucky, given his astounding influence on Wrexham’s promotion.

Throughout the season, the 29-year-old displayed exceptional performance, scoring 23 goals in 36 matches. In addition to goals, Mullin contributed seven assists in the league and achieved two remarkable hat tricks. Despite his impressive performance, Mullin missed out on the Golden Boot, with Langstaff claiming the title with his 27-goal tally.

While there is anticipation for Lee and Okonkwo’s well-deserved recognition, Paul Mullin’s absence undoubtedly leaves a sense of dissatisfaction. However, that didn’t stop the Wrexham star from leaving an indelible mark, with even rivals like Blackburn Rovers rallying for his achievements to be recognized.
