USWNT won the 2015 and 2019 editions. They can win the third World Cup in a row this year. It will make the US team the first ever to achieve it in men’s or women’s soccer. It will be an enormous achievement for US Soccer.
Alex Morgan reflects on the team’s three defeats last year
Once the 2022 NWSL season ended, it was time for national team action for the US players. With the 2023 World Cup approaching and a number of practice windows less, USWNT wanted to take advantage by playing as many friendlies with top opposition as they can. USWNT played England, Spain, and Germany in October and November last year.
They lost three consecutive games against Spain, England, and Germany. It happened for the first time since 1993. When recently asked about those three defeats, Morgan said, “For the team, we needed to play top competition at that time in the year to test the team, to throw some adversity at the team, and to show that we, regardless of being our best or not, have to compete with the other top teams in the world.”
The two-time World Cup winner added, “We were coming off the end of a very long season. We didn’t have all of our players. But at the end of the day, you can’t make excuses, and you have to compete. We didn’t get the job done a couple of times. But I feel like because of those three games, we’ve actually grown stronger from that. We’ve learned a lot from that.”
It was an honest assessment by the San Diego Wave FC forward, who will go out to Australia and New Zealand to win her third consecutive World Cup.
