Is Lindsey Horan's time with the USWNT over after another lackluster performance?

Admit it, seeing Emma Hayes‘ USWNT back in action surely brings back memories of the Paris Olympics. To the American ladies’ fortune, they even managed to take the lead over Iceland at the Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas just before halftime. However, in a twist of fate, their performance also revives another unfortunate memory from the Summer Games as after watching Lindsey Horan play, many passionate fans called for her to be discarded from the squad.

This is just after 45 minutes have passed on the field. As the captain during the Olympics, Horan was once again given a starting spot by Emma Hayes in the center of the pitch. However, unlike others, she has yet to make much of an impression. In fact, things have backfired for her. Throughout the first half, her performance has been somewhat sloppy.

The 30-year-old has clearly struggled to make even the simplest passes to her teammates. On several occasions, she not only lost possession of the ball but also seemed to lack the intensity to fight for it. It’s almost as if age is catching up with her, as she was seen struggling to make proper runs. Unfortunately, Horan made similar mistakes in a few of the Olympic matches as well.

Interestingly, this also brings back memories of the controversy surrounding her Ballon d’Or nomination over star defender Naomi Girma. While five USWNT players, including Horan, Trinity Rodman, Mallory Swanson, Sophia Smith, and Alyssa Naeher, were shortlisted, many questioned why Girma was left out—especially since she was hailed as the “best defender I’ve ever seen” by Emma Hayes.

Now, Horan’s current performance has become a hot topic among passionate fans, with some arguing that she shouldn’t be called up at all.

USWNT fans call out Emma Hayes to forget and move on from Lindsey Horan!

Looks like Lindsey Horan won’t easily be getting away from the USA fans this time. Many netizens on X, formerly Twitter, are slamming the midfielder’s performance and have urged Emma Hayes to do the required justice.

Have an interesting take?

It’s a bit painful to watch one player struggle and make mistakes while the remaining 10 give their all. We aren’t being hard on Lindsey but this fan believes that she is the ‘tumor’ of the whole starting XI. On top of that, a bit of unnecessary selfless play is also harming her reputation among the audience.

First, we saw the majority of fans pointing out the fact that Lindsey Horan even made her way into the Women’s Ballon d’Or nominations. Whether she deserves to be there is something that lies in grey area, this fan rather wonders how the 30-year-old got her hands on the captain’s armband.

A simple yet subtle request from this netizen: “Make a pass.” The majority of the criticism Horan is receiving from USWNT fans stems from her selfish play, particularly her tendency to constantly take shots. We understand that she wants to get her name on the scoresheet, but this approach is not working in her favor either!

Shots fired! Everything has gone south for Lindsey now as fans now don’t seem to trust the veteran even the slightest with the ball. No wonder they are demanding a player who is more dynamic or maybe young, that can at least bring what Horan is failing to on the pitch.
