The USWNT put on a lackluster display in their final game of the World Cup group stages against Portugal, with the game ending in a goalless draw. While the team managed to make it into the knockouts, their performance in the group stages left many dissatisfied.

While the side started their campaign on a bright note with a win over Vietnam, the games against Netherlands and Portugal saw the team struggle to get it going. Despite making it into the knockouts, former USWNT skipper turned pundit Carli Lloyd ripped into the team’s performance following their abysmal display.

With 5 points to their name in 3 games, Team USA managed to secure a top-two finish in their group edging past Portugal. While the team has managed to make it into the Round of 16, experts are not too pleased with the team’s performance. Carli Lloyd, who was present with Fox Sports following the game, criticized the team for their celebration after the game.

“I have never witnessed something like that. There’s a difference between being respectful of the fans and saying hello to your family. But to be dancing and smiling, I mean the player of the match was that post. You are lucky not to be going home right now!”

While Lloyd’s words may seem harsh to some fans, the USWNT has yet to put its best foot forward in the tournament. Despite some of the best forwards in the world, the team has managed to find the back of the net just four times in three games.

While the game between the USWNT and Portugal ended in a draw, Portugal, for the majority of the game, dominated their opponents. Despite taking 17 shots in the game, Team USA could keep just 6 on target but failed to get past goalkeeper Inês Pereira.

The team avoided a narrow scare in the closing minutes of the game as Portuguese substitute Ana Capeta smashed one at the posts. With the goalkeeper beaten, had the forward managed to keep the shot on target, The Gals could have taken an exit from the tournament in the group stages.

Despite the draw, USA’s attack once again looked clueless in crucial moments as they failed to convert crucial opportunities. If the team fails to step up to the challenge in the coming games, fans could see one of the top contenders take an early exit from the tournament.
