There has been a lot of discussion about US soccer. The game is witnessing a huge surge in its popularity, especially since the extraordinary run by the USMNT in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Even though a huge rise in soccer viewership definitely came due to the mega tournament, the upward curve in popularity was set by the TV show Ted Lasso. The Apple TV series started in August 2020 and it has seen three successful seasons ever since. It pushed the fans towards watching soccer and has worked as an amazing marketing campaign for soccer, especially in the US.

In the World Cup, the USMNT made it to the knockouts. The Netherlands eventually knocked them out in the round of 16. Despite that, it was a very successful run, keeping the team’s history in mind. Pundits all around the world were praising USMNT’s midfield, particularly their games against England and Iran. The run has made fans more hopeful about the future of the team. However, an ongoing coaching crisis means all the work on the team is halted. However, the USSF is making efforts to fill up the position.

Ted Lasso is an Apple TV original comedy series centered around soccer. The plot of this series is that an American coach goes on to manage a British soccer team. It is quite obvious that he lacks the fundamental knowledge of soccer strategies. However, with his optimism and determination, he continues to work on the team. The US soccer legend Alexi Lalas has recently discussed the effect this series on American soccer.

He said, “This quote from Jim Curtin is really interesting, when I think about Ted Lasso and the effect that it has had on, something that is near and dear to me, to you to us, when it comes to American soccer and the way that it has brought people into the soccer tent. There is a part of me that absolutely looks at it as positive and something that I’m excited about and proud about. But make no mistake, Ted Lasso is built around a stereotype of American Coaches.

Jim Curtin talked about Lasso

The stereotype he is talking about is that US coaches lack the knowledge of strategies and planning when it comes to soccer. It has been a very popular opinion in Europe for a long time. However, recently, things have started to shift. A lot of this came from the fact that USMNT was able to stop England at the World Cup. Moreover, the emergence of forward thinking coaches from the United States like Jesse Marsch have also helped in destroying the stereotype.
