Manchester United achieved the unthinkable at Anfield. Their last two matches at the stadium ended with an aggregate score of 0-11. However, the Red Devils put in an inspired performance against Liverpool yesterday to walk away with a point. The club was without its captain Bruno Fernandes, who was banned after accumulating 5 yellow cards. However, as per a Liverpool legend, this proved to be a blessing in disguise for Erik ten Hag & Co.
With just 31% of the possession, Manchester United was made to work very hard off the ball. However, they operated at an intensity rarely displayed previously. Could the absence of Bruno Fernandes have prompted this change in play style?

This is the opinion of Liverpool legend Steve Nicol who gave his thoughts on the ESPN FC show. He said, “Bruno Fernandes being suspended for this game helped Manchester United… because every single one in a United Jersey today was all about hurrying, defending, closing down, chasing.”He added, “As much as Bruno Fernandes could convince himself that he could have done that, he couldn’t… and he wouldn’t have done it.” Strong words indeed from the Scottish pundit.
Moreover, Nicol also implied that the Portuguese midfielder would have played had he been available. With 23 appearances already this season, the Man United captain is among the first names on the team sheet for ten Hag. As per Nicol, that would have been to the detriment of the team.
While Bruno Fernades might not have the work rate of a N’Golo Kante, he is far from a liability without the ball. The Portuguese international ranks in the 90 percentile for tackles and clearances. All this is without even considering his immense creative abilities. Hence, the criticism and viewpoint regarding Bruno, who is possibly United’s best player, is quite puzzling.

Bruno’s last visit to Anfield did not go well as his side were beaten 7-0. Moreover, his attitude was criticized considering he was the captain on the night. There were also claims that he got booked on purpose last week to avoid another defeat against Liverpool. Also, his record against the big teams has not been particularly great.

However, the reality is slightly different. Since joining Manchester United, he has been their most consistent performer. With 5 goals and 5 assists, the Man United captain has been in form this season as well. However, there is an unfair expectation on him to deliver in all the games. Furthermore, the responsibility of being captain is weighing him down as well.
