Since the USWNT’s exit from the World Cup, Megan Rapinoe has been subject to major criticism. Former US President Donald Trump taunted her too. Amid all the criticism, a famous American author took a moment to rationalize the reason why Rapinoe missed her penalty kick. He explained to the fanbase about a certain ‘sweet spot’ and compared taking a penalty kick to ‘rock, paper scissors’.

The author turned out to be one of the few people who didn’t criticize the soccer veteran. After releasing an emotional statement to the fanbase, Rapinoe has gone lowkey on social media. A three-peat would have been the perfect end to her career but it just wasn’t meant to be.

Recently, on the Human Action Podcast, American author Bob Murphy tried to bring some logic into Rapinoe’s penalty kick miss. Without any surprise, the fanbase was furious after she missed her penalty and the result could have been much different had she converted it. Murphy explained that she was looking to place the ball into the top right corner, as the ball is unstoppable in that range.

He called it the ‘sweet spot’ but also mentioned that there are trade-offs involved. In Rapinoe’s case, she missed the target and the ball sailed over the goal which is one of the main risks. The author then went on to make an interesting reference to a game that millions of people play. He quoted, “They roll up their sleeves and get into looking at the history, I think it was men’s teams there but just again showing that it’s kinda like rock, paper, scissors”.

“If it became known everybody always just shot at the high-probability area then the goalie would know that and they would move there and block it”. Further, the co-host of the podcast put forward a very simple conclusion. Ryan McMaken quoted, “The point is that Megan Rapinoe isn’t necessarily a complete moron. That’s there is actual strategy. Sometimes you take a risk and it doesn’t end well. This doesn’t prove anything”.

Donald Trump called the USWNT’s loss ‘shocking’ and ‘totally unexpected’. About the soccer veteran, he said, “Nice shot Megan, the USA is going to Hell!!! MAGA”. Along with that, he also taunted the current President of the US. As everybody knows, Trump and Rapinoe have a long-long history particularly since their last World Cup trophy, four years ago.

The USWNT legend didn’t directly respond to Trump’s criticism. Instead, she dropped an emotional statement for the fanbase. Through that, she made a reference to every social cause she had fought for. She stated that she ‘fought for everything her team had and deserves’. The US will not back down after this loss for sure. In fact, they’ll come back much stronger for the next international tournament.
