Did Emma Hayes' Olympic snub tarnish Alex Morgan's legacy, or does her career speak for itself?

Well, it’s finally happening. After a good while of hoping that this moment might never come, this Sunday will mark the end of an era as the legendary Alex Morgan plays her last game. While she’s getting a proper send-off for her club career with the San Diego Wave, things are a bit different regarding her time with the USWNT. After being snubbed by Emma Hayes for the Olympics, for the 35-year-old this is a ‘bittersweet’ end to her USWNT career.

Remember that jaw-dropping moment when the Olympic roster came out and everyone was shocked by one big omission? Yep, Alex Morgan wasn’t selected for the first time since 2008! It would’ve been great to see her have that final tournament in her honor, but it didn’t pan out that way. Still, the USWNT forward doesn’t seem too hung up about it.

In what turned out to be her last press conference as a San Diego Wave player, she gushed about her love for the teams she represented. “I really love this team (SD Wave) so much,” stated Morgan. “I also love the national team.” Reflecting on how things wrapped up with the USWNT, she said, “It’s a bittersweet way to end, but I gave everything to that team for 15 years.”

Even though she’s not going out in a storybook fashion, you can tell she still has plenty of smiles looking back at all those incredible moments—from winning gold medals to tackling challenges off the field.  “I’m just really grateful, and I’m really happy where I am,” added Alex Morgan.

Have an interesting take?

And let’s be real, Alex Morgan checks all those boxes with 1 Olympic gold and 2 World Cups under her belt. But does she even want it? Well, here’s the scoop: she announced her early retirement because she’s expecting her second child.

With pregnancy on the horizon, there’s really no way she could play in those October and November friendlies that would’ve made perfect send-off games for this USWNT legend. So it looks like we might be saying goodbye to her journey with the team for good. As they say, ‘Don’t be sad it’s over; smile because it happened!’
