After leading Wrexham back to the Football League following a 15-year absence, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have fulfilled the dreams of the club’s fans. With plans in the pipeline, it seems that this is just the beginning of their upward trajectory.
The Hollywood owners are in for a long-term commitment and are ambitious to reach the Premier League. They have spent almost $12 million to secure promotion from non-league football. This serves as a reminder of the substantial costs involved in climbing the football pyramid. In fact, according to a well-known soccer financial expert, $350 million worth Ryan Reynolds needs to spend over $200 million.

Football finance expert Dr. Dan Plumley has emphasized the challenges that Wrexham may face. While speaking to Grosvenor Sport, he said, “It’s important to look at the revenue gap between leagues.” He explained the revenue gap between League One and League Two is about £1,000,000. “It’s not too big. That’s the revenue gap, not investment.”
He continued saying that it may cost Wrexham another £5 to 10 million to get out of League Two. The expert later highlighted the risks that are involved in such investments. “The big risk in all of this in sport is jeopardy, because of course you’re not guaranteed to go up. That needs to be factored in.”
According to Dr. Plumley, Wrexham must consider spending after achieving every single promotion. He says that even after spending another £10 million in League One, they may face competition from big clubs like “Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday” that have fallen out of the Premier League.
He then highlighted the revenue gap between the Championship and the Premier League, saying it is about “£100 to £150 million.” Plumley added, “And so you can probably there get to a figure that’s in the ballpark of £200m even if you go straight through, which is unlikely.” The expert added even after that “There’s no guarantee that you do that year on year.”
Dr. Plumley says Reynolds needs “significant investment to even think about getting into the Premier League.” It must be alarming for Reynolds, who will be looking to cautiously spend each penny. After all, he has already lost nearly $3.7 million!
