The situation for the Brazilian national team is becoming more complex. Its ace forward, Neymar, whom they look up to for every major tournament, will drop the ball in the Copa America 2024. Seleção will now have to look for a capable replacement as the star’s absence may affect the team’s attack. The news has come at a time when Brazil has not been having the best of times in soccer. The player had also been suffering constant injuries this year.
Neymar’s employer, Al Hilal, was the first to receive the blow because the player had to be excluded for the entire season. Just playing five games for them, the $418 million player’s initial inclusion into the national team in September had already worried its coach, Jorge Jesus. Now his fear has become a reality, as Neymar could miss his opportunity to win an international title.

Injuries have been a worrying factor for the 31-year-old for a long time. But this year, they got even more devastating as they took more than a year of soccer away from Neymar. After sustaining an ACL and meniscus injury to his left leg in October, Brazilian national team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar says that the star cannot make the tournament in time. Even though he is expected to get well by August, the idea of expediting his cure is not a good one, according to the doctor.
"Nous n'aurons pas le temps, il est trop tôt, cela ne sert à rien de sauter des étapes pour récupérer. Nous espérons qu'il sera prêt à revenir au début de la saison 2024 en Europe, c'est-à-dire en août", a déclaré Rodrigo Lasmar, sur Radio 98 FM. (@geglobo)

Speaking on Radio 98 FM, Lamsar said, “We won’t have time, it’s too early, there’s no point in skipping stages to recover. We hope he’ll be ready to come back at the start of the 2024 season in Europe, which is in August.”

The player suffered the injury while playing the 2026 World Cup qualifier against Uruguay. An anterior cruciate ligament injury is one where the ligament that holds the knee joint is hurt or torn. This in turn leads to impairment in the movement of the leg along with a considerable amount of pain, according to medical experts. The player has been undergoing rehabilitation for the last one and a half months.

The process, as initially informed, was a slow one after the surgery he underwent in early November. The player’s earlier injuries were also the reason for the duration of the recovery. The rehab was informed to be taking place in stages, with the initial phase addressing his muscle strengthening and building process. The subsequent steps will be to restore the movement and ability to bear weight, then exercise, and finally train.

This will definitely raise concerns for the Canarinhos, considering their recent losses and poor form in the World Cup qualifiers. After a disappointing World Cup campaign last year and also missing out on winning the last edition, the soccer-loving nation needed their record goalscorer to be there. However, since it is beyond their reach, Fernando Diniz and Co. will need to prepare an alternate forward for Neymar.
