Since Lionel Messi joined, Inter Miami has been playing some quality soccer. Well, both, the club and captain just played in their first final against Nashville. It turned out to be quite a nail-biting contest between the two of them. After a 1-1 scoreline the winner of the Leagues Cup final would be decided through a penalty shootout. After six rounds of sudden death, the game finally had a winner and it was Inter Miami.

NBA veteran and Nashville’s part-owner Giannis Antetokounmpo had turned up for the game. Seemingly, in the form of banter, he pulled off Cristiano Ronaldo‘s famous ‘Siuu’ celebration in front of the crowd. Surely, that wouldn’t have really mattered to the Argentine soccer legend as his eyes were fixed on the prize.

Before the kick-off whistle, the aim was pretty much clear for both teams. It surely wasn’t going to be a walk in the park for Inter Miami as Nashville was capable of possessing a serious threat too. Did that really bother Lionel Messi? It didn’t seem like it did. Mainly because he seamlessly scored the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute. He maneuvered his way cutting outside the box and ripped an absolute banger.

There were no goals after that for quite some time. At halftime, both teams headed into the tunnel with a narrow 1-0 scoreline in Inter Miami’s favor. Nashville had to find a way to hit back and they did. They managed to scramble the ball into the back of the net from a set piece in the 57th minute. It was registered as an own goal to Drake Callender’s name but that wouldn’t have greatly bothered Nashville.

With a 1-1 scoreline, the game headed into the final ten minutes. But neither team managed to score. Inter Miami’s Campana had to chance to edge a winner but it just wasn’t his night. The game’s outcome was down to a penalty shootout. Messi, Busquets, Campana, and Miller converted their penalties, but Ulloa failed to do so. It was the same scenario with the home side.

The shootout moved into sudden death. For the six more rounds the fanbase had their heart in their mouth. It was then down to the goalkeepers. Callender scored but Panicco failed to do so. And Inter Miami were winners! Here’s how the fans reacted.

It will be the best soccer match in the USA for a long-long time, for sure!

You know how much of an impact Messi actually has when rival fans laud him too.

Feels surreal, doesn’t it?

In the end, Drake Callender who conceded the own-goal got the chance to redeem himself!

In a month, the Argentine soccer legend’s impact has been unbelievable! Just imagine what he could do to Inter Miami with half an MLS season.

All in all, Lionel Messi’s first-ever final with Inter Miami turned out to be an absolute thriller. The fans went absolutely berserk after the game. Interestingly, the World Cup winner maintained his streak of scoring in every game since his debut. Campana could have sealed the game in the final seconds of stoppage time but a straight win for Beckham‘s Inter Miami wasn’t too dramatic already, was it? In the end, Inter Miami won it in style.

The surreal impact of Lionel Messi at Inter Miami

Nobody ever imagined that Lionel Messi would have an impact in the USA. Funnily, he hasn’t even made his league debut yet. Before he joined, David Beckham’s soccer side was in turmoil. After just sacking their manager, the Miami-based club couldn’t seem to get out of the winless rut. Well, all those concerns are bygones now, aren’t they? Along with bringing Messi bringing his own charm, he’s done a lot more.

He’s helped players like Robert Taylor, Benjamin Cremaschi, Josef Martinez, and many others raise their game to the next level. The club’s next game is another tough knockout battle against FC Cincinnati in the semifinal of the US Open Cup. In all likelihood, a club that is languishing at the bottom of the MLS standings could suddenly be a part of two cup finals within just over a month since Lionel Messi’s arrival. Surreal isn’t it?
