Welcome to a new era of the USWNT! The American ladies coached by Emma Hayes are back again dominating the soccer realm as they thrashed Group B rivals Germany 4-1 in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. But beyond the victory or the beginning of a new era, Team USA has witnessed the birth of a mint attacking trio of Sophia Smith, Mallory Swanson, and Trinity Rodman. While fans are coming up with interesting nicknames for their star triad, iconic veteran Becky Sauerbrunn has found a fascinating suggestion.
The hunt for the new nickname was initiated by ‘Men in Blazers’ and its subordinate Instagram page, ‘The Women’s Game.’ Sharing the picture of Smith, Swanson, and Rodman, a question was put up for fans to invent a new nickname for the WNT’s star players. Interestingly, the post caught the eye of Sauerbrunn and the Thorns defender commented, “I saw “Triforce” somewhere and I think that has to be it. Whoever makes a Zelda reference wins automatically.”
Interestingly, the 38-year-old herself revealed that the name comes from Zelda. For those unaware, it is a Japanese action-adventure game franchise that comes under the Japanese multinational video game company Nintendo. Likewise, the word ‘Triforce‘ refers to a fictional artifact and symbol from Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda video game series.

While it’s unclear whether Sauerbrunn is a Nintendo fan, what is known is that the defender is confident that this name goes well to call the trio of Smith, Swanson, and Rodman. Notably, usually in men’s soccer, MSN (Messi-Suarez-Neymar) or BBC(Bale-Benzema-Ronaldo) have been used to name such iconic trios. In this equation, SSR, SRS, or RSS is something to consider.
Regardless, ‘Triforce’ suits as well. While the name for the trio is a lengthy discussion, in the meantime, let’s look at the front three’s remarkable performance.

Trinity Rodman assisted Sophia Smith in opening the scoring for USWNT just 10 minutes into the game, but shortly after, Germany’s Giulia Gwinn equalized. The situation worsened for Die Nationalelf as Mallory Swanson restored the lead for Hayes and her team, with Smith scoring her second goal just before halftime.
The second half didn’t feature many goals, but Lynn Williams, who substituted for Smith, found the back of the net in the final minutes, making it 4-1. With this victory, USWNT tops Group B with 6 points and has qualified for the quarter-finals, despite having one group stage match remaining against Australia.
