Hungary managed to clinch a narrow win against Group A rivals Scotland but it came at a huge cost. Time came to a standstill after the winning side’s star forward Barnabas Varga sustained a terrible knock on his face during action. It created a moment of chaos as players and medics looked tense with fans praying for the best. While Varga was stretched off the pitch in an unconscious state, there was finally some news regarding his tough injury blow.

After witnessing the horrific clash, the first question that would have popped into everyone’s mind would have been; is Barnabas Varga going to be all right? Well, to give everyone a sigh of relief, the forward is finally in a conscious state. As per the transfer guru Fabrizio Romano and an update from the Hungarian FA, after a diagnosis from the medics of a Stuttgart-based hospital, Varga is out of danger and is in stable condition.

Likewise, during the post-match presser, Hungary head coach Marco Rossi also gave some updates on his injury. As compiled by @liveherewego on Instagram, he said, “Barnabás Varga’s life is not in danger, for sure”. However, the 25-year-old would be required to undergo surgery, confirmed Rossi. “He will undergo an operation after a fracture in his face and he won’t be available for the rest of Euro 2024.”

Notably, the shocking incident transpired during the 67th minute after Hungary had won a free-kick beyond 40 yards. As skipper Dominik Szoboszlai chipped it inside the penalty box, Scotland’s goalie Angus Gunn, in an attempt to clear the ball, slammed his elbow into Barnabas Varga’s face. Simultaneously, Hungary defender Willi Orbán had also tripped in the box to appeal for a freekick. However, the referee was rather caught up by Varga’s collision and quickly indicated for the medics to look into the matter. The match was stopped for over 7 minutes until the play resumed.

Martin Adam replaced Varga on the pitch. With the score still stalemate, both sides tried to push each other’s button. In a dramatic turn of events, Hungary managed to break Scotland’s high-defense line with Roland Sallai opening the play wide, only to put the cross inside the 6-yard box. A space opened up for forward Kevin Csoboth to net the ball into the back of the net in the 90+10 minutes. The final whistle blew as Hungary still kept their chance to go into the RO16, with Scotland’s Euro 2024 journey coming to an end.
