The 36-year-old Spanish international always displayed a great personality on and off the pitch. In fact, there were rumors that he was interested in becoming Barcelona’s future President. Looks like that’s on hold now after Gerard Pique’s most recent update.

Despite retiring in quite decent physical condition, many expected Gerard Pique to be involved in the commercial side of the game. While he has established the Kings League as a runaway success, the soccer veteran’s new statement is one that will leave most soccer fans stunned. From a viral tweet doing the rounds on X, Pique has hinted towards an unexpected participation in the 2024 Kings League.


And this involvement would seem to be as a player and not only from the board level. Considering the unique rules of the Kings League, could this be just a one-off appearance from the former Barcelona man, or perhaps is he looking to continue his playing career elsewhere? The most adventurous soccer fans surely wouldn’t rule out a classic reunion with his Barcelona mates, namely Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets at Inter Miami. On a different note, what’s so special about the Kings League? Is that the actual future of the sport?

The King’s League is not your straightforward soccer tournament. It is a seven-a-side league between 12 teams with some unique elements added. This includes unlimited substitutions, fan votes, and golden cards. The golden cards function like power-ups and each team can choose one among five of them prior to kickoff. Some of the golden cards include instant penalty, the ability to rob a card, and double goals. To call the King’s League wacky is quite an understatement. Interestingly, the viewership and metrics of the league have been quite high.

Kings League is a spectacle on social media. 92,500 fans attended the finals of the inaugural Kings League at Camp Nou despite the fact that many of the players were not popular. Many people believe that soccer is in dire need of changes to stay relevant in the modern era. While maintaining the purity of the sport, FC Barcelona’s President had once spoken a few words in favor of Pique’s idea.

He said, “ Pique has invented a way of enjoying football with a lot of fun, especially for the youngsters. I think Pique’s Kings League is a way of modernizing football. It gives it sustainability”.
