Despite not being a financial superpower recently, and having a debt of $1.2 billion, FC Barcelona has remained an attractive destination for elite players. In recent years, the Catalan club has added players like Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Joao Cancelo, and more. But this summer, the Spanish giant could be about to make its biggest transfer move in years. As per reports, FC Barcelona made contact with Erling Haaland‘s agents. Could it be related to the ‘special’ release clause for non-English clubs?
The news was broken by Gerard Romero’s Jijantes FC. Footage has emerged of Deco following Rafaela Pimenta, who happens to be Erling Haaland’s agent, to a restaurant in Spain. However, Romero has warned the fans of getting too excited. He said (translated via Google), “I want to make it very clear that we are not saying that Barça is going to sign Haaland. We are simply stating that this meeting has taken place.” But that wasn’t the only confirmation.

Moreover, he added, “We also confirm that Haaland to Barca is a topic that has been discussed.” FC Barcelona’s interest in Erling Haaland signifies that they are looking to move on from Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker’s contract expires in 2026, but at 35, Lewandowski is not the player to build around.
On the other hand, the Norwegian ace plays for Manchester City, who plays soccer in a similar style to the Catalan club. Interestingly, the Man City striker has a release clause of more than $200 million, applicable only for clubs outside England. However, as per Victor Font, this could be outside FC Barcelona’s reach.
The current ‘management model’ deemed a hurdle for signing Erling Haaland
A few months ago, talented youngster Lamine Yamal signed a new contract with FC Barcelona. On the occasion, the club’s Executive Director, Victor Font, laid out the challenges in signing Erling Haaland and renewing player contracts. He said, “Either we change the management model or tomorrow we will not be able to renew Lamine [referring to a future renewal].

“Or we will not be able to compete for Haaland when he wants to play in the Spanish La Liga”, he concluded. Font’s words imply that Barcelona would need an administrative change to facilitate transfers like the Norwegian. Interestingly, star midfielder Pedri is convinced that Haaland will be a success at the club.
When asked to name one player he would like at the Catalan club, Pedri said, “I would choose Messi at 19 or 22 years old, of course. But since that’s not possible, I’d go with Haaland.”
