The never-ending debate in soccer finally deviated from Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. After the 54-goal heroics in 2023, CR7 is undoubtedly proving to be a monster. On the other hand, the Argentine won the Ballon d’Or. However, the sport itself seems to direct us to have different perspectives and think beyond goals and accolades. Recently, an ex-Saudi Pro League star’s choice of a certain African soccer legend as the ‘GOAT’, instead of popular names, shows us why the debate is diverse and not limited to just two players.

The current generation of young stars could be considered a bit unlucky, as they will ply their trade under the shadow of two greats. Interestingly, it was the same case with the previous set of players. Names like Robert Lewandowski, Luka Modric, and Neymar have all contributed immensely, but do not get the deserving praise. However, Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan had a unique mention to make.

Asamoah Gyan was recently asked about who would make it onto his list of best players. The former Ghana striker first clarified, “Of all time?”. He continued, “Because he is a center forward, I have to choose George Weah. He is an African. He is the only African who has won the Ballon d’Or. You know, during his time, there were a lot of durable defenders. No disrespect to this generation, but those times were.” The 2010 World Cup star grew up watching legends like Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo Nazario. However, Liberian international and ex-PSG star George Weah has a rare achievement that sets him apart, which has led Gyan to choose him.

George Weah won a Ballon d’Or in 1995, four less than Cristiano Ronaldo, but remains Africa’s only player to do so. In 1995, Weah was the UEFA Champions League top scorer with eight goals! The player also won the Coupe de France, the French League Cup, and the African POTY award. After 1995, he went on to have great spells at AC Milan and Chelsea, winning two Serie A titles and an FA Cup as well.

George Weah retired in 2003 and is the current president of Liberia. Asamoah Gyan, coming from the same continent, felt that the 57-year-old has had a great impact on Africa. George Weah also claimed to have a tougher challenge against greats of the game like Javier Zanetti and Bixente Lizarazu, among many others. However, he did not have an opportunity to participate in a single FIFA World Cup!
