Hollywood has invested not only star power but also around $1 billion in one corner of the UK. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s acquisition of Wrexham AFC in 2020 has been credited with giving a major boost to tourism in North Wales, according to delighted tourism chiefs.

According to the chief executive of North Wales Tourism, the global publicity generated by the Hollywood A-listers and Wrexham AFC co-owners has put Wrexham on the map like never before.

Reynolds bought struggling Wrexham with co-chairman McElhenney in 2020 for a total amount of $2.1 million. Their aim and mission for the project was simple — transform the club’s fortune. The chief executive of North Wales Tourism believes that Wrexham’s co-owners have already accomplished their task.

As reported by the Leader, North Wales’ tourism boss Jim Jones was speaking ahead of the annual Go North Wales Tourism Awards, and mentioned the impact of the dynamic duo.

“It’s impossible to accurately calculate the precise value of the profile created by their special brand of magic, but the Rob and Ryan factor would undoubtedly be worth more than £1 billion if you had to pay for the equivalent coverage in advertising,” Jones stated.

The success of the Disney+ show, ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, co-produced by Ryan Reynolds, that shows Wrexham’s journey towards English Football League has generated millions of viewers across the globe. Various international visitors from the US, Canada, and even Australia have traveled to Wales in order to experience the Wrexham life, depicted in the show.

Jim Jones added to the fact by saying, “We need to capitalize on the fairytale success of Wrexham football club and the fantastic job Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are doing, not only in reviving the club and taking it back to the promised land but the global headlines they are getting in the process.

Reportedly, the presence of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney generated an estimated whooping $1.2 billion through their marketing stints and persona across the globe.

Priceless publicity generated by Wrexham’s documentary

North Wales Tourism head Jim Jones credited the geniuses of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney for their marketing strategies. He claimed that the duo’s ideas and global presence are a big factor considering Wrexham’s recent success. And they are providing a ray of sunshine for North Wales tourism.

“When it comes to marketing, Rob and Ryan are absolute geniuses. It’s brilliant for the city of Wrexham but the whole of North Wales is benefiting from the golden glow of the priceless publicity generated by their brilliant documentary series, Welcome to Wrexham,” Jones added.

As the Hollywood touch has provided a major boost to Wrexham and North Wales, all eyes will be on Wrexham’s performance in the EFL League Two this season. With Reynolds and McElhenney at the helm, it will be interesting to witness the evident growth of the club.

Wrexham will be next in action against Tranmere Rovers, when they visit Prenton Park to face them on September 2, Saturday.
