Who could have thought the Covid pandemic would prove the precursor for the new era of the world’s third-oldest soccer club? It was during the pandemic time Rob McElhenney watched documentaries on soccer that ignited his interest in soccer. Ryan Reynolds entered the scene through direct messages over social media. And the two came together and brought Wrexham AFC on February 9, 2021.

The new chapter for Wrexham started. It was not about soccer only. It was also about the increase in the popularity of the club. The owners dedicated themselves to improving the club and taking it globally. Their passion for the club attracted praise globally. And recently, Ted Lasso made an incredible statement about the owners and Wrexham after the club got promoted.

Ted Lasso likens Wrexham and its owners to ‘Rocky’

The story of Wrexham has been incredible, especially after the Hollywood takeover. After over 80 years in league soccer, the Red Dragons got relegated to the fifth tier of English soccer in 2008. After 15 years of absence from league soccer, Wrexham will play in the Football League. Fans started to recognize the club in 2022 when Reynolds and McElhenney released Welcome To Wrexham season one.

Apart from having Hollywood owners, their display this season garnered more interest from fans. The US soccer fans were no exception to that, as the trends were high for Wrexham in the country during the games. The trends outclassed high-profile games on several occasions.

While speaking on the rise of Wrexham in the US, thanks to its owners, Jason Sudeikis (who plays Ted Lasso) likened the story of the club to the iconic movie Rocky. Sudeikis said“I used to say in the pitch about football or soccer not being as big in the States or whatever, but this is as much about football as ‘Rocky’ is about boxing.”

He added, “Good timing with Ryan – not bad, right? It’s great! It’s nice to have people so enthusiastic about having American ownership. I don’t know if it’s wildly ubiquitous, but it certainly has helped Wrexham out!” praising Ryan Reynolds.
