2023 has been a promising year for women’s soccer; moreover, fans are eagerly waiting for the FIFA Women’s World Cup to kick off.  Women’s soccer has the highest following of any women’s sport globally. Since women’s soccer has already started receiving a lot of recognition, the equal pay policy has become a major concern.

Furthermore, there are several female athletes who are fighting for equal pay as male athletes. It’s true that the planet’s best female soccer players’ income doesn’t even come close to what the highest-profile men earn. Sam Kerr is the highest-paid female soccer player in the world.

The Australian has starred for English Women’s Super League club Chelsea, earning around $513,000 per year. After Sam, Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe rank at the second and third spots. The USWNT stars earn over $450,000 and $447,000, respectively.

While this is a significant amount, it represents only a fraction of what leading male soccer players earn. In comparison to one of the most renowned soccer stars, Cristiano Ronaldo, Sam ranked far below the Real Madrid legend.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also became the first soccer player on the planet to cross the $1 billion mark in terms of total earnings. After seeing Ronaldo humbly shutting down the highest-paid female athlete, the equal pay policy becomes a global concern.

Owing to women’s soccer’s phenomenal achievements in the past, female athletes are now receiving better economic treatment. However, more needs to be done at the club level so that pay-gap between male and female players can be closed down.
