As Close Friend Mocked With a Racist ‘Banana’ Joke, Megan Rapinoe Worships Vinicius Jr Following Iconic Moment

The gifted Vinicius Jr. suffered from racial abuse on May 21st that confused the world. Even in 2023, racial slurs are still common in the society. When Real Madrid went down 1-0 against Valencia, fans hurled abuse at Vinicius during a set-piece moment. Since then, fans have supported the player for standing up for himself. Likewise, the Brazil soccer national team donned black jerseys for the first time. It was a part of the anti-racism campaign that the players adopted following the controversial incident. The gesture prompted great applause from all sections of society, including USWNT legend Megan Rapinoe.

Even Cristiano Ronaldo’s son donned a Madrid jersey to show his support. According to CNN, the police officials arrested seven people after the incident, but Vini continues to garner support from people. Yet, the racial slurs still continue in Spain after another incident came up. It left a sour taste after Rapinoe’s support for the Brazilian. 

Megan Rapinoe supports Vinicius Jr. following a racially abused incident

The star soccer player posted a story showing her support for the sensational soccer player. Rapinoe is one of the world’s most vocal players and involves various societal issues. She uses her brand image to get justice and gets involved in numerous anti-racism protests. Likewise, she was involved in the USWNT equal pay movement, which became a resounding success. Hence, Rapinoe had earlier posted an Instagram story for the Brazilian stating it, “Hero.”

The black kit became iconic for what it stood for as the team played a friendly against Guinea in Barcelona, Spain. The anti-racism campaign adopted the slogan, “With Racism, There Is No Game.” But, during the same game, an untoward incident occurred before the match. Similarly to Vini Jr., the soccer player’s advisor, and friend, was also subjected to racism before the game.

While arriving before the friendly match in Barcelona, a security guard took a banana out of his pocket and reportedly stated, “Hands up, this one is my pistol for you.” Therefore, the situation is going from bad to worse. 

Tackling racism is a long-term issue

The eradication of racism is not a straightforward task. Many incidents happen across all sports concerning racial slurs and attacks. The Vinicius Jr. incident became another example of how racism is not out of sports despite all the campaigns and movements. As they took small steps to curb this issue, the friendly game saw Brazil winning the match 4-1. Vinicius Jr. scored a late penalty to shut down the miscreants.
