Wrexham has finally made its first summer signing in the form of Arthur Okonkwo. Well, technically, the goalkeeper has re-signed on a permanent transfer after his year-long loan deal at STōK Cae Ras came to an end. Fans are thrilled to see him pledge allegiance to the Red Dragons. As he embarks on this new journey, Okonkwo has received a stamp of approval from some of the biggest names at his parent club Arsenal, including Bukayo Saka and Ian Wright.

The 23-year-old penned an emotional farewell to the Gunners on Instagram by posting his old picture in an Arsenal kit. “The time has come to say goodbye @arsenal ❤️. Having joined the Club in 2009 at 8 years old, I have so many incredible memories from over 15 years,” he wrote. Okonkwo extended his heartwarming gratitude to all the coaches, teammates, and staff he worked with over the years. “Arsenal will always be special to me and I hope to see them be successful in the coming years. Thank you 🤝,” he concluded.

Interestingly, current Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka, who played alongside Okonkwo in the youth days, congratulated the new Wrexham star over his move. He commented, “Go shine bro ❤️.” Additionally, the club’s iconic midfielder Ian Wright also thanked him for his years of service. “Thank you for your time. I hope you have all the success the hard work you put in deserve. 🙏🏾❤️.”

Likewise, Lyon midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who has also shared a locker room with the goalkeeper in youth days, wrote, “All the best brother ❤️.” And many of his old Arsenal friends sent their best wishes to Okonkwo. While the youngster’s permanent arrival gives a huge boost to Wrexham, they are set to face a major upset in their transfer pursuits.

Despite Arthur Okonkwo’s good news, Wrexham set to face a major blow

Wrexham’s long-term target Josh Magennis may not join them as planned. According to the latest report, League One rival Exeter City is likely to sign the striker. Notably, he was released by former Premier League side Wigan Athletic after his two-year contract expired this summer. Surprisingly, the Northern Ireland striker previously played under Phil Parkinson at Bolton Wanderers in 2018-19.

However, he left due to wage issues as well as an alleged disagreement with Parkinson over financial concerns at that time. With over 100 goals in 600 appearances for club and country as well as having been a part of 2x League One title-winning campaigns with Hull City and Wigan, Wrexham would have benefitted from Magennis’s experience. However, they may have lost their grip on him.

It remains to be seen now which players Ryan Reynolds and Co. will sign. For now, we wish Arthur Okonkwo the best of luck on his Wrexham endeavor 2.0!
