Argentina has been in tremendous unity since the World Cup last year. After winning the tournament, the connection between the fans and the people has grown a lot. Being away from his country, Lionel Messi always cherished going back home whenever he got a chance. And this year, 2023, gave fans and players the chance to meet at one of the country’s most iconic stadiums, La Bombonera. Messi took this opportunity to share his emotions with another Argentinian legend.
The stadium is always in competition with another iconic stadium in the country, the Estadio Monumental. But Argentina’s last match could not be played there due to Taylor Swift’s concert. However, playing at Bombonera, Messi got an opportunity to catch up with another former Argentina star.

It’s always a good feeling when the best player in the world decides to give a compliment. Lionel Messi caught up with Juan Roman Riquelme, a former Argentina and Barcelona teammate of Lionel Messi. The 45-year-old is also the vice president of Boca Juniors and also manages the ground. After speaking to Messi, Riquelme claimed that Messi loved the change in the stadium as it got prettier.

In an interview with TyC Sports, Riquelme said, “It’s the most beautiful field in the world. When I was with Messi, he told me it was getting prettier every day. The playing field is European.”
Messi spoke to him on the 2026 World Cup qualifier match day against Uruguay. He claimed that the field was similar to European turf and was even better. The Albiceleste lost the game 2-0, their first loss since losing to Saudi Arabia in 2022. Messi had also visited this stadium in June for Riquelme’s farewell game, and it seems like the player loved the ground.

Messi’s long association with Riquelme
Messi’s not someone new to Riquelme. The Argentine captain played with Riquelme on the Argentine national team. They both played together in the 2006 World Cup and also won Olympic gold at the 2008 Beijing Games. The players played together in 27 games, scoring 7 goals in total.
