Is Argentina soccer heading towards a transition? While the team has been making waves in international soccer recently, Lionel Messi’s injury woes creep up. The star once again had an issue in the game against Chile which seems concerning to the fans. But as the team qualified for the quarterfinal without Messi finding the net, questions emerged whether the Albiceleste needed the 8-time Ballon d’Or winner to win the title this time. However, a former MLS icon and Copa America participant has given a startling verdict that the team can achieve it without Messi.

Speaking on ESPN FC Alejandro Moreno feels that Lionel Scaloni’s can just manage to pull off their 16th Copa America title without Messi. When asked if the World Champions can win if Messi’ remains absent because of injury, he said, “They can, but obviously it’s not nearly as likely as with Lionel Messi on the field,” hinting that they hold a chance but will not be favorites without him.

Meanwhile, after winning the 2022 World Cup, the team looks more secure. Argentina hasn’t lost or drawn a single game since their clash against Saudi Arabia in November 2022 except a loss against Uruguay in the World Cup qualifiers last year. A few of those matches did not have Messi due to his injury struggles, giving the supporters hope.

Therefore, Moreno also felt the need for his teammates to adapt without the Inter Miami captain. The Venezuelan also felt that such a situation is inevitable and stated, “You need to find answers as to who is going to be that guy that will be a difference maker.” Currently, the team may well be on course to identify such players, as Leo is uncertain about future matches.

Injured Lionel Messi makes things tough for Argentina

Turning 37 recently, Lionel Messi’s age seems to be taking a toll on him. It was once again his right thigh under stress during the game against Chile after getting hit by Gabriel Suazo in the 24th minute. The player completed the full 90 minutes but expressed that it kept him uncomfortable.

Messi stated, “It’s bothering me a little bit but I was able to finish the match. It was hard for me to move freely, particularly side to side. We’ll see tomorrow how it feels,” although citing that it wasn’t serious. Messi already suffered a hamstring injury earlier this year which will keep him apprehensive about starting games.

Moreover, Scaloni is not expected to take a risk with him against Peru since they have already qualified, and key fixtures are yet to commence. Meanwhile, the team is receiving contributions from youngsters such as Lautaro Martinez, and Julian Alvarez, who could be given the responsibility of keeping the momentum up. But whether the team will function with such ease without their captain remains a million-dollar question.
