Liverpool FC is currently sitting at the summit of the premier league and also dominating the UCL with their head coach Arne Slot bringing a tactical revolution to his team. It is evident that Liverpool is the town’s talk when it comes to the players rumored to join his style of play. Among these players is the left-back Antonee Robinson who currently plays for Fulham.

With Robinson revealing that he is open to leaving Fulham in the January transfer window, there are speculations about him being the perfect fit into Arne Slot’s system. “I know he’s an Everton boy, but I think for me, Liverpool is the perfect one for him because he could be. Robertson doesn’t sort of invert into midfield that much, but he does sometimes sort of make a bit of a back three, and I’m sure that’s something that Slot would like to be able to do with his left back,” explained James Benge on the latest podcast episode of CBS Sports Golazo America’s Call It What You Want segment, co-hosted by the panel of Jimmy Conrad, Charlie Davies, and Tony Meola.

Slot is known for his possession-obsessed with heavy pressing football. His style of play demands active full-backs who can be avid contributors, and the USMNT star is just the ‘right man’ for the job. Antonee Robinson is known for his pace, and impressive defensive abilities combined with his expertise in attack as well.

He has all the attributes to shine in Slot’s high-intensity demanding system. Liverpool, with their heavy reliance on their full-backs, might want to groom a young player as the current left-back Andy Robertson’s successor. With Slot revolutionizing the number of games the players have to play and the injury concerns, Robinson can provide perfect rotation in the squad.

Robertson vs Robinson: challenge for the left-back slot as a starter?

With over 289 appearances for the club, the Scottish left-back has scored 11 goals and provided 59 assists with 82 clean sheets playing a key role in the club’s success by being an asset both offensively and defensively. However, age is not just a number when it comes to football. Liverpool is already thinking about the future of the left-back role considering how modern-day soccer works.

While Liverpool is trying to solve the riddle of a fresh pair of legs in the left back, Robinson is just the right answer. His excelling attributes both offensive as well defensive-wise make him the potential replacement for Andrew Robertson at Anfield. His ability to dominate a 1v1, pressing ability aligns with Arne’s style of play.

Slot who relies on his tactical excellence and squad flexibility will surely look out for Robertson’s successor and would groom Antonee Robinson as Liverpool’s next LB. Given the fact Robertson has been dominating the left-back category for the past few seasons, it would be hard for Antonee Robinson to challenge him for the starting position. Keeping in mind the long run and the physical demands he can surely be available as a rotation for the spot. Looking at Robinson’s abilities, who knows he might even replace Robertson as the starter. It would be interesting to see how it goes in the coming seasons.
