The striker helped his nation to emphatic World Cup glory, especially after scoring a brace in the famous 7-1 thrashing of Brazil. Thus, he scored 22 goals and had seven assists in 57 matches for the national camp.
Coming from the ranks of Ludwigs FC, Schurrle had a rather versatile domestic journey. The forward has played for the likes of Mainz, Leverkusen, Chelsea, Wolfsburg, and Dortmund. He also enjoyed a few loan stints at Fulham and Spartak Moscow.
Life after soccer
No one saw it coming, but Schurrle hung his boots at quite an early age. The World Cup winner took the decision in 2020, aged 29. He had many more years left, but the German took the time off from soccer.
After retirement, many opt to become coaches or managers; however, Schurrle took the high road instead. Recently, the 32-year-old shared visuals of himself on Instagram, trekking on the icy mountains, without a shirt or coat. He was just wearing shorts, boots, mittens, and a hat.
The former Chelsea man revealed he was trekking in -19 degrees. All this is a part of a specifically designed quest by famous motivational coach and extreme athlete Wim Hof.

“Day 3 of the @iceman_hof experience and up the summit with our beautiful crew!! The hardest mental and physical thing I ever did! The last minutes I couldn’t feel anything, and I had to find something deep inside me to keep going!” wrote Schurrle on Instagram.
He admits that it was one of the hardest things he has ever done.
“An experience that I will never forget! -19 degrees, 100 km/h wind in our faces, heavy snow, and rain! What I learned…My body and I are stronger than I thought. If I put my mind and soul to it I can do everything.”
Schurrle also stunned his former teammate
Perhaps this is one of the craziest things any soccer player has chosen after their retirement. But we appreciate the dedication he is exhibiting towards his fitness.
His remarkable achievement has left his former teammate Didier Drogba astounded. The former Chelsea man replied to Schurrle on his Instagram, “Fashion week @andreschuerrle proud of you my man my body would have stopped functioning straight away.”
Evidently, the Ivorian was surprised by his transformation, who was pushing his limits in such adverse conditions.

Schurrle also posted a picture of himself meditating and admitted how it has helped him. “Cold exposure was one part of our experience! The other part were heavy breathing sessions!” he wrote.
“The emotions and feelings that came out of these sessions were incredible! I cried, I laughed and I relaxed! I forgave people and I felt an amazing gratitude for my life and the universe,” he added.
