The negativity surrounding the 2022 FIFA WC in Qatar

Since last month, countless cases surrounded the whole event with negativity, from its alleged human rights violations to strict laws against the LGBTQ+ community. Recently, a video went viral where Doha’s security department’s personnel were caught threatening to break a journalist’s camera.

The countless reports of human rights violations against migrant workers went so far ahead that the FA had to release an official statement. “We welcome the assurances given by the Qatari Government and by FIFA regarding the safety, security, and inclusion of all fans who travel to the World Cup, including LGBTQ+ fans,” the FA said. “However, embracing diversity and tolerance also means supporting human rights. Human rights are universal and they apply everywhere,” the statement added.

The performance of the USMNT in the men’s FIFA World Cup has not been notable since 1930, when the team last made it to the semi-finals. The roughest patch started after 1950 when the team would next qualify for the WC in 1990. In 2002 the USMNT made it to the quarter-finals, but they lost to Germany 0-1. Furthermore, they lost in the Round of 16 in the 2018 edition against Belgium, 1-2 in overtime.

Fans have high hopes for the team this year, and fans will be hoping for another deep run in the tournament in Qatar. Notably, the USA is in Group B with England, Iran, and Wales.
