For any young athlete, representing their nation is one of the greatest achievements of a lifetime. The feeling of wearing your national colors, walking out of the dugout to hear the crowd cheering, and seeing your family in the stands is a dream that Alyssa Thompson hopes to achieve along with her sister, Gisele at the 2028 Olympics. But for the young Thompson sisters, there’s still time for their dream to become a reality.

Both Alyssa and Gisele Thompson, natives of Los Angeles and players for Angel City FC, dream of being part of Emma Hayes‘ starting XI at the 2028 Olympics, which will be held in their hometown. With Alyssa already having made a few appearances for the USWNT, she hopes her younger sister gets a call-up soon.

Yeah, I think it’s kind of like an unspoken thing because it’s so far away and we really wanna get there and there’s so many steps before we can think about (it)” Alyssa told ex-USWNT star Sam Mewis on ‘The Women’s Game’. “That is a dream of ours to play together in LA at the Olympics, that would be so cool, with all of our family and stuff” added Alyssa.

And host Sam Mewis knows all too well about playing with your sister for she and Kristie Mewis have played together for the USWNT. Gisele who has played in plenty of young camps, recently was part of the U-20 Women’s squad for the 2024 FIFA World Cup, where the side finished third, their best result at the tournament since 2012.

Having already trained with the senior senior USWNT camp as a non-roster player, Gisele is already familiar with her sister Alyssa’s teammates. For now, they will have to consistently perform at club level for them to earn a place in the highly competitive lineup for the national team.

Emma Hayes defends Alyssa Thompson after England draw

For the friendly against England, Hayes decided to rest key players like Sophia Smith, Mallory Swanson, and Trinity Rodman, starting Emma Sears, Alyssa Thompson, and Lynn Williams instead. Despite the team’s underperformance which saw only three shots on target throughout the match, the ex-Chelsea boss defended her players and expressed satisfaction with the overall performance.

So the decision-making execution, that comes with a connection—Trin, Soph, and Mal, they’re used to that. It’s a lot of new players—Emma Sears, Alyssa Thompson, Lynn Williams, a trio that’s never played together before. So I think we did well for that.” said Hayes in the post-match interview

Hopefully, the Thompson sisters will have plenty of time to hone their skills and show the world why Nike signed them to a NIL (name, image, and likeness) deal while they were still in high school. With both sisters having exceptional stats for their given age, the US camp will be closely monitoring their time at Angel City FC.
