Would Alyssa Naeher be as successful without the unwavering support of her family?

There has been a change of guard in the USWNT, as Emma Hayes went bullish on youngsters for the Olympic squad. Even Alex Morgan did not make it. But Hayes couldn’t snub the US’s 36-year-old ace goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher. The two-time world champion will feature in her third Olympic tournament, as Team USA kicks- off their Summer Games campaign in Paris on July 24th. Will Naeher’s biggest supporters- her family, notably her father, who defended her after USWNT’s 2023 World Cup exit fly to Paris to support the USWNT? Well, surprisingly, it is quite doubtful.

But Naeher’s father John and mom Donna will perhaps host a watch party in Connecticut, where her family and friends would gather in a huge crowd to watch USWNT games. They did that in 2019 when Alyssa Naeher’s centenarian grandmother tearfully watched her granddaughter win the 2019 FIFA World Cup with the USWNT.

John Naeher must be proud that his daughter inherited his sporting gene and later peaked as a professional sports icon. John Naeher was a part of King’s College’s basketball and athletic team. Naeher later joined as the coach of the boy’s basketball and soccer teams at the Christian Heritage School in Connecticut. He also coached his twin daughters Alyssa Naeher and Amanda in soccer in high school. Naeher Sr also gave basketball training to his daughters in their junior and senior years.

John Naeher has been there through thick and thin with Alyssa Naeher.“I’m mostly proud of who she is, and I tell her this all the time.  She’s been great at not letting soccer define her. She plays hard, she’s trained hard for years, but she always has worked hard at keeping it in perspective,” said John Naeher when his daughter and the USWNT crashed out of the 2023 World Cup.

John Naeher married the Western Connecticut State University graduate Donna. She worked as a teacher in private schools and also plied her trade as a customer service representative. She reportedly gave up teaching in 2007 and ventured into real estate. An established realtor since then, Donna Naeher joined William Raveis Real Estate in 2018. John and Donna raised three daughters including Alyssa. Now, let’s talk about them.

Alyssa Naeher’s younger sister Amanda too had ventured into soccer. But she could not go any further like her sister- the US goalie because she picked a back joint injury in 10th grade during an away game. Amanda later pursued a health and physical education degree from Messiah College, which would later help her to return to the soccer pitch. She is currently working as the physical education head at the Charlotte Christian School. She has coached the school’s volleyball and soccer teams previously.

Alyssa and Amanda have a younger sister named Abigail. Unlike her sisters, Abigail is no athlete. She works as a registered diet nutritionist. She has two kids and one of them was notably born on the same day Alyssa Naeher won the 2015 World Cup with the USWNT. Now, it would be interesting to see how Naeher’s close-knit, yet large family supports her during her 3rd Olympic stint in Paris.
