The GOAT debate always keeps the soccer faithful’s tongues wagging every time. Each time, fresh narratives bring a unique twist to this controversial topic. This time, Alphonso Davies has dipped his toe into running waters to choose between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. However, the Canadian’s opinion could stir up a storm among Real Madrid devotees as rumors swirl of a potential move.
In one episode of ESPN UK’s ‘You have to answer’, the Canadian international participated in a quick rapid-fire installment. Interestingly, at the start of the segment, he was presented with the ‘Messi or Ronaldo’ question. Without any thought, Davies replied, “Messi,” an answer that may impress Barcelona fans, but not the Madridistas. The 23-year-old could make the move from Bavaria to the Spanish capital this summer. And his answer won’t make him a popular figure in Madrid. Yet, there’s one interesting thing though!

The next question saw him choose between Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, to which Davies selected the PSG star. This response may settle among the Madrid fans, given that Mbappe himself is bound for a potential move to Spain. Moreover, they could even occupy the same left side of the pitch multiple times at the Santiago Bernabeu. Notably, just last night, Bayern Munich hosted Leg 1 of the UCL semi-final clash.
While both sides ended the match 2-2, Davies, unfortunately, didn’t get enough time to impress out against his potential suitors. Thomas Tuchel brought him into the game during the 87th minute. Perhaps the wing-back might get a chance in the return leg in Bernabeu, where he might have an awkward encounter with the fans. Not just because he chose La Pulga over CR7, but also because of a special gesture he made for Messi.

Alphonso Davies seems to have a special place in his heart for Lionel Messi!
Back in February 2023, the Canadian superstar had a chance to face Lionel Messi during the Champions League round of 16 clash between Bayern Munich and PSG. Even though his team secured victory in Leg 1 at Parc des Princes, Davies was spotted exchanging shirts with the then-PSG player. That very jersey now adorns Davies’ home in Canada, carefully framed as a memento.
Interestingly, this gesture follows a previous attempt by Davies to swap shirts with Messi back in 2020, after Bayern’s resounding 8-2 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League. However, he was informed that Messi was too distraught to participate in the exchange. Certainly, these things make his transfer to Real Madrid quite hard.
