Have you ever wondered who the best players in CONCACAF are? If you ask us, Christian Pulisic is a strong contender, with the AC Milan and USMNT forward showing no signs of slowing down. Another name that makes the cut is Jonathan David, who represents Canada and Ligue 1’s LOSC Lille. However, for American icon Charlie Davies, it’s a different debate, as he sees David ‘below‘ another Canadian superstar: none other than Alphonso Davies.
Before we tell you how the former Stars and Stripes forward came to such a conclusion, let’s try to set the scene for how it all started. In the recent episode of CBS Sports Golazo’s Call it What You Want podcast segment, the usual trio of Charlie Davies, Tony Meola, and Jimmy Conrad, sat to discuss the happenings of the beautiful game. Interestingly, during the conversation, the debate for the current best CONCACAF player began.
Notably, in a succinct reply, Conrad took the name of Pulisic over David. However, when asked by Charlie, he came in support of his fellow Davies, and highly rated the Bayern Munich left-back over the Lille forward. “Alphonso Davies is the top dog. Jonathan David isn’t passing Alphonso Davies, let’s be real,” said Charlie Davies.

Even though Alphonso and Christian are both stars on the international stage, former American striker Charlie Davies favors the Bavarian left-back over the forward any day. In fact, Charlie took it a step further by placing Jonathan lower in the pecking order and adding other USMNT stars to his list in the debate over CONCACAF’s best.
“Right now, it’s between Alphonso Davies and Christian Pulisic as the best player in CONCACAF, that’s it. And just under them is Sergino Dest and Weston McKennie, and then you could add maybe Jonathan David below that,” concluded Charlie Davies, clearly stating his preference for the left back over the striker.

Starting with Christian Pulisic, the American skipper has been in fine form this season, considering the past has seen him remain susceptible to injuries. In over 15 games for AC Milan across all competitions including Serie A and the UEFA Champions League, the 26-year-old has notched 7 goals and 5 assists. That also comes with remarkable goals and on-pitch displays.
As for Jonathan David, the Canadian center-forward isn’t also shy of making a mark. So far, the 24-year-old has played 19 games for LOSC Lille across all competitions including the UCL qualifying stages and its ongoing campaign, as well as Ligue 1, where he has bagged 13 goals and 2 assists. As a traditional goalscorer, he looks to be doing his job quite well.
Although being a defender, Alphonso Davies shouldn’t be compared to the forwards, Charlie Davies, Tony Meola, and Jimmy Conrad didn’t mind bringing the ‘Roadrunner’ to the debate, so here he is. In over 15 matches for Bayern Munich across tournaments like UCL, Bundesliga, and DFB-Pokal, Davies has 3 assists.

Of course, we wouldn’t expect Alphonso to take up the goalscoring duties; then again, he has a similar impact as Jonathan and Christian as a team player. However, which among them is better? Why don’t you share your thoughts in the comments?
