Before Lamine Yamal lit up the UEFA Euro stage as a teenage sensation, the 19-year-old USWNT striker Jaedyn Shaw had the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup under her feet. Adding a SheBelieves Cup title to her cabinet, the serial winner from Dallas now laces up for the Paris Olympics. When Shaw earned her first USWNT cap as an 18-year-old, she became the first American of Vietnamese origin to represent the US. Soon, she will be the first American Olympian with Vietnamese roots. Where do her Asian roots come from? Let’s find out.

About Jaedyn Shaw’s multi-ethnic family
Jaedyn Shaw’s father Lance Shaw is an African American and her mother Ann migrated to the US from Vietnam. Nothing is known about the duo’s professional background. They must have surely come from a working-class background, as they reserved most of their earnings to invest in a young Jaedyn’s budding soccer career.
“There was a year or two where all four of us lived in a one-bedroom apartment to be able to afford for her to go out of town, out of state, out of the country. My husband and I set our lives on the backburner ”“ no vacations, no honeymoon, no nothing ”“ in order for us to be able to handle the financial burdens that came with the opportunity,” said Shaw’s mother Ann.

Jaedyn Shaw, however, thinks the congested space in their tiny apartment brought the family closer. She is also eternally indebted to her parents’ great sacrifices, “I owe everything to my parents for the sacrifices that they made for me. I know that we didn’t always have a lot to work with, and they always made sure that I had what I needed to be able to play the game that I love,” said Jaedyn Shaw. Now, let’s have a further sneak peek into her personal life and her sibling.
