Alexi Lalas warns USWNT—Is Canada’s drone scandal a sign of desperate tactics?

It all started bizarrely in the 2024 Paris Olympics. New Zealand women’s soccer camp saw a flying object over their training session, which triggered a warning in the USA. The staff of Canada’s women’s soccer team is accused of spying on New Zealand’s training via drone days before their opening game. Consequently, the players are facing severe repercussions despite being innocent. While talks suggest that this process could have preceded the 2024 Olympics in Paris, former USMNT star has cautioned the USWNT and its coach Emma Hayes regarding the issue.

As the teams may be concerned about their tactics being leaked, Alexi Lalas has called for precautions in such cases inside the USWNT camp. Speaking on his State of the Union Podcast, the former player stated, “If you’re the United States Soccer Federation when it comes to JT Batson or Cindy Parlow Cone, and now Emma Hayes or whoever comes in as the new men’s coach, you better be looking and you better understand exactly what has happened before,” suggesting them to understand how serious the issue is.

He further said, “And if there’s something in the past where the United States Soccer Federation was involved, either deal with it now or make sure you scrub the hell out of it so it doesn’t come up because people will be looking and you better be damn clean,” urging the board and the coaches to probe and take such incidents to task and stay without blemish.

Meanwhile, Canadian soccer players despite their winning performances have received hefty penalties for their entourage’s ideas. Apart from their coach getting sacked, six points were deducted from their group-stage games reducing their chances of progressing into the knockouts. Additionally, there is growing doubt about the genuineness of their previous gold medal-winning speech, as reports suggest a possibility that similar spying tactics have been employed since that time.

Hence, Lalas doesn’t want to witness such problems with his fellow compatriots. However, the Stars and Stripes seem confident about their unit.

USWNT is a league of its own under the leadership of Emma Hayes

Despite the controversy surrounding the spying allegations, the USWNT has dominated every team they face. Emma Hayes already emphasized the value of culture in the team and may not prefer using technology that way. Nevertheless, it looks like they do not need to at the moment.

Have an interesting take?

Having to lose a game under the English coach, even prominent teams like Germany succumbed to them by a huge margin of 4-1. Earlier, it was the all-attacking Zambia, who got nowhere near the USWNT losing 3-0.

The team will be without their crucial defender Tierna Davidson as they take on Australia in tonight’s final group-stage match. In addition, their forward Jaedyn Shaw will still be out due to a leg injury. Since Hayes’ women have already booked their quarterfinal spot, they are not expected to be fazed by Australia.

As they enter the contest as the favorites, they will also spare a thought for the Canadian stars and try to keep better surveillance on such activities.
