Did the US Soccer Federation dodge a bullet by not hiring Marcelo Bielsa? What do you think?

The 2024 Copa America had nothing short of drama. On top of that, the USMNT had a major reality check after being knocked out in the tournament’s group stages, ultimately leading to Gregg Berhalter’s sacking. Hence, amid the US Soccer Federation’s search for a coach, it was called out by one fan for letting go of an opportunity to sign Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa a few years ago raising questions about the board’s recruitment. However, this time, former star Alexi Lalas, despite the disappointment of their USMNT’s performance, backed the soccer board, calling it the right approach.

The Stars and Stripes were reported to have refused the Argentine in 2016 because of a language barrier. Hence, a fan called out this decision as a ‘shame’ considering how his spell at Leeds United went about. However, Lalas replied to him, saying, “Language matters. Communication matters!”

He continued, “Understanding matters. Especially in a limited-time situation like a National Team. Saying we all speak the language of the game is cute, but it’s idealistic and naive. Yes, language barriers can be overcome, but they all slow you down,” suggesting that communication in the team was important considering the time constraints in preparing for big tournaments.

Meanwhile, Bielsa’s style of coaching, which focuses on possession and attack, is well-respected. However, his lack of communication in English proved to be a barrier, not just in landing in the USA but also at Leeds United. Nevertheless, his hand in upgrading the team’s quality was lauded by many, hence leading fans to question the hiring process of US Soccer.

In fact, he also took Uruguay to the Copa America 2024 semi-finals, only to be knocked out by finalists, Columbia.

Contrary to Marcelo Bielsa’s snub, US Soccer could revamp recruitment

US Soccer has struggled to acquire the right manager after Berhalter’s exit. A few experts have criticized their method, calling it a bit too harsh. Last year’s process saw US Soccer use psychometric and aptitude tests to scrutinize the potential candidates. But this time, their tactics, along with the language criteria that hindered the signing of Marcelo Bielsa, may take a back seat. US Soccer could be forced into hiring someone without native English to head to the 2026 World Cup.

After failing to secure Jurgen Klopp, reports suggest the board is in talks with French manager Hervé Renard. Moreover, Spain’s Euro-winning coach Luis de la Fuente is also claimed to be interested in the role indicating the potential of a non-USA manager arriving.

Nevertheless, it is unknown how well the managers can communicate fluently in English, but their ability to uplift USMNT could be prioritized before the 2026 event.
