The time has turned tumultuous for Alex Morgan. The 35-year-old recently recovered from a threatening injury, only to shockingly discover she won’t be a part of the USWNT’s Olympic squad. The next day, Morgan shot a penalty kick over the bar, her side- the San Diego Wave’s heavy defeat against the Chicago Red Stars. Well, that was not the only time the two-time world champion came close to scoring. She hit the back of the net in the last NWSL tie against the Portland Thorns, only to have the referee rule it offside. However, Morgan now thinks the referee was wrong.

NWSL’s official X page shared a clip of Alex Morgan’s close miss in the Wave’s 1-0 loss to Portland on July 5th. “Alex Morgan with THE chance but ruled offside,” NWSL captioned its tweet. The USWNT and San Diego Wave’s veteran striker re-shared the tweet today and saw a chance to fire shots at the referee. Looks like THE chance was actually a goal, confirmed by the league and @PROreferees. My 2nd one, wrongly disallowed this season but one day I’ll get one that will stand,” wrote Morgan and added a laughing emoji and a dizzy emoji.

As it happened, Alex Morgan’s supposedly wrongly denied goal came in the 37th minute against the Thorns and it would have put the Wave ahead. The Wave eventually saw the game being taken away by the Thorns. And Portland’s Izzy D’Aquilla scored its winning goal in the 85th minute to slap Morgan and Co. with yet another loss. Speaking of losses, the 35-year-old has struggled to walk away from them this season and find light at the end of the tunnel.

Alex Morgan is battling a season marred by a goal drought and consistent losses

Though Alex Morgan contracted an early injury during this NWSL campaign, she only missed six games with the San Diego Wave. She started 8 times and played in 10 games altogether. Yet, Morgan has shockingly failed to score at least once for the Californian outfit. She made this tainted record, despite shooting a whopping 27 times and shooting on target 10 times. While Morgan is struggling to score a goal, her team is struggling to find a win.

The San Diego Wave last won an NWSL tie on May 18 against the Bay FC. Thereafter, the team has been going winless for seven games. These winless days, notably, led to the Wave’s ace coach Casey Stoney’s sacking. Morgan’s side is now in the bottom half of the NWSL table, struggling as the league’s 10th seed. The Californian side resumes action this weekend by facing Bay FC in the first round of the NWSL x Liga MX Feminil Super Cup. A stellar display in the tournament is the need of the hour for Morgan and Co. to have a break from their forgetful ongoing NWSL run.
