It is rare in pro sports leagues to see a newly joined team become the biggest crowd-puller. But the NWSL seems different. The San Diego Wave rewrote the NWSL history last year. In only its 2nd NWSL season, the Wave averaged more than 20,000 fans (highest league attendance) per game when they played at home in the Snapdragon Stadium. Now, Alex Morgan‘s team awaits its NWSL home opener against KC Current on Saturday. The club’s President, Jill Ellis believes two factors, one of them being the splendid fan ‘experience’, will help their attendance soar again.

The San Diego-Kansas City tie will kick off at 7 PM PT. But the stadium will open for its fans at 3:30 PM with an array of Fan Fest-centric events. No wonder why fans rush in crowds to see the Californian side.

In a recent interview, Jill Ellis was asked if she expects her club to replicate those record fan numbers again. “Absolutely, I do,” she said. “Last year, what we showed is that there’s a fun atmosphere at our games. There’s a great energy. People enjoy coming together and cheering on the team,” Ellis continued. Thereafter, the Wave’s President credited the club’s star-studded roster, which draws crowds too.

“Ultimately, it all centers around the team that we put out there. The fans kind of fall in love with the players and want to show up and root for their favorite players,” Jill Ellis continued. Besides the 2x World Champion Alex Morgan, San Diego features USWNT stars such as Jaedyn Shaw and Naomi Girma. Polishing this stellar roster, the Wave welcomed 7 new players including superstars such as Savannah McCaskill and Kaitlyn Torpey.

Last year, NWSL’s Commissioner, Jessica Berman lauded San Diego’s marketing technique and fan fests. This year, San Diego opens their NWSL campaign with a treat for the fans.

Besides, Alex Morgan’s side’s marketing methods were termed ‘best practices’. Awaiting the 2024 NWSL season, they have amped up their fan events. The expected fan fest before the Wave-Current tie will feature live music from DJ Heabnasty and a performance from the Fuego Dance Crew from World of Dance.
