‘I’m not planning to hang up my boots anytime soon right now,’ was what Alex Morgan said much to soccer fans relief. This was a year ago after the round of 16 match against Sweden in the USWNT’s lowest World Cup. Just over a year down the line, one of the most prolific goalscorers’s retirement took the world by surprise considering her strong mentality. Despite missing out on the 2024 Olympics, Morgan may have thought to help the struggling Sand Diego Wave in the NWSL. However, she has now opened up, revealing the reason for the unpredicted decision.
Speaking in a recent press conference, Morgan confessed that she had to expedite her exit from professional soccer. “To be honest, I wasn’t expecting to finish my career mid-season. This came unexpectedly. In the beginning of 2024 I wanted to end this season,” she told the press. The 35-year-old had already informed that the decision was made in early 2024 but not in the middle of the season.
Nevertheless, Morgan later reflected, “A few weeks ago I found out that I was pregnant and it was unexpected as it was. I was so happy because this was what our family wanted, a couple of months sooner than expected,” suggesting that her pregnancy was the main reason for the decision.
