Al Hilal was facing a glaring Neymar-sized hole-in attack at the start of the campaign. Questions were asked as to whether the Saudi side can cope without their star signing. Enter Aleksandar Mitrovic. The former Fulham star has blown all concerns out of the park with a stunning return of 17 goals in as many matches. And so, soccer fans are now well used to his trademark celebration. But what is the meaning behind it?

It was in August 2022 that the world took notice of Aleksandar Mitrovic’s now iconic celebration. The Serbian striker scored twice to give Fulham an unexpected draw against Liverpool FC. Nevertheless, the Serbian has been using this celebration since 2018.

The Mitrovic celebration is certainly unique but not exclusive to him at all. The celebration involves spinning his hand around the ear. However, before Mitrovic, two Italian stars used a very similar gesture while celebrating their goals. They are legendary Italian forwards Luca Toni & Christian Vieri. Interestingly, both of them shared a very similar profile to Mitrovic in the sense that they were proper number nines.

Luca Toni used the spinning gesture while representing both Italy and his clubs. The striker has scored over 260 career goals & and has displayed his celebration a fair few times already. Likewise for Juventus man Christian Vieri, who put up 194 goals in 374 appearances for club and country. Furthermore, Fulham legend Diomansy Kamara used to celebrate similarly as well. Could it be that Mitrovic is just expressing his admiration for the club icon?

Fans in Serbia have put forward a humorous theory behind this. They believe that Mitrovic is trying to ‘unscrew the bulb.’ The player was questioned about his spinning celebration back in 2018. Here’s what he said.

‘So much inside me’, Mitrovic addresses the question regarding his celebration

Mitrovic doesn’t have a specific reason for his celebratory antics as per an interview from 2018. He said, “Football is about passion and when I score I have so much inside me that has to come out. I need the release.” Moreover, he explained about his son’s reaction to it.
