Can Ronaldo lead Al-Nassr to victory, or will Al-Taawoun spoil the party in the Saudi Super Cup?

The Saudi Super Cup is the curtain-raiser for the Saudi Pro League. Cristiano Ronaldo and Al Nassr will face Al Taawoun in the Saudi Super Cup semi-final. As Ronaldo comes off a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign, he hopes to recollect his mojo for the coming semi-final. The two teams will face each other at the Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Stadium.

Meanwhile, Rúben Neves’ Al-Hilal will face Roberto Firmino Al-Ahli in the semi-finals of the Saudi Super Cup. But Al Nassr has plenty to do before they could reach the finals. Their winless run in the pre-season brought fears to their upcoming campaign for 2024/25. Yet, they lost only one competitive match in the last nine. For sure, Ronaldo and Co. can win the league this time around?

For now, let’s explore the match’s expected line-ups, injuries, and broadcast details.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Ronaldo lead Al-Nassr to victory, or will Al-Taawoun spoil the party in the Saudi Super Cup?

Have an interesting take?

Clearly, Al Nassr has done better in their head-to-head record. But if you look at the last five matchups, it’s a pretty tight affair. Al Nassr won thrice while Al Taawoun claimed two victories in the past five matches.

Injuries

Al Taawoun:

Both teams have some injury concerns heading to the match. Al Taawoun’s Rakan Al-Tulayhi has been out with a cruciate ligament tear since December 8th, 2023. He has missed 20 games so far and continues to recover from it. However, Mateus could not play because of a tendon tear injury on March 1, 2024, as things look grim upfront.

In addition, Andrei Girotto and Mohammed Mahzari remain on the sidelines and won’t feature in the contest.

Al Nassr:

The Knights of Najd are also missing some key players. Talisca has been out with a muscle injury since March 3, 2024, missing most of last season. In the meantime, tricky-winger Otavio has been out with a muscle tear since June 3rd, 2024. His time in the Middle East could not catch fire with inconsistent form and recurring injuries. Mohammed Maran has also been out with an injury since April 1st, 2024. In some fresh injury concerns, the team will also lose Sami Al-Naji, who got injured in the pre-season friendly against Granada. The player will take 7-10 days to recover from a knee bruise.

Expected Starting line-ups

Al Taawoun: GK– Maylson; Def- Al Oyayari, Al-Saluli, Al-Ahmed, Al-Shoeil; Mid- Guanca, El Mahdioui, Bahusayn; Att- Al Kuwaykibi, Pereira Dos Santos, Barrow

Al Nassr: GK- Ospina; Def- Al Ghanam, Ali Lajami, Laporte, Telles; Mid- Marcelo Brozović, Al-Khaibari, Al- Najei, Sadio Mané, A.Ghareeb; Att- Cristiano Ronaldo
