Whether it was a coincidence or not, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo went in opposite directions, leading to a lot of financial revolutions in soccer. However, it is another Saudi giant, Al Hilal, who seem to reap rewards for their investment in the market. Meanwhile, David Beckham‘s team, whom they will face tomorrow in the Riyadh Season Cup, did not need to spend hundreds of millions like the Saudi Pro League clubs. But the distribution of stars is quite similar for Inter Miami and Al Hilal. However, what’s the comparison between their spending?

Al Hilal has been dominating soccer in Asia for many years now. The Saudi club has won four AFC Champions League titles and 18 Saudi League titles. On the other side, Inter Miami is in the nascent stages of trying to pull off their first league trophy. But when it comes to finances, who will ace the game?

The Saudi Pro League invested a total of $957 billion in the 2023 summer transfer window, as per Deloitte’s Sports Business Group. Moreover, the main contributor was Al Hilal, who spent approximately $407 million. But the team from Riyadh went bizarre considering David Beckham’s club spent less than 20 times what they’ve done on transfers.

Inter Miami have approximately spent just $15.2 million but gained players like Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba in their first season. Nevertheless, the main difference in the cost is due to the availability of players for the club. Lionel Messi rejected an offer of $1.6 billion from Al Hilal to go to Inter Miami instead for a total compensation of $150 million in two and a half years. And the player arrived at Inter Miami as a free agent without incurring any transfer costs.

Whereas Al Hilal’s marquee player Neymar alone cost $98.5 million, with other players like Malcom, Ruben Neves, Aleksandar Mitrovic, and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic costing between $44 million and $65 million. Contrarily, Inter Miami received players like Busquets, Alba, and even Luis Suarez for free.

Will Inter Miami’s spending help them match Al Hilal’s success?

Even though they were financially facing success, David Beckham’s club received players at their secondary stage, unlike Al Hilal. All the star European signings for Inter Miami are above 35 and have had minor to major injury issues recently. Al Hilal, on the other end, has built a young and strong squad except for Neymar, who has been struggling with recurrent injuries.

On the performance front, Al Hilal has clearly made a mark. Being undefeated this season, the club is expected to win the Saudi Pro League, being seven points ahead of Al Nassr. Additionally, they are also the favorites to win the AFC Champions League after a disappointing 2022–23 final. Inter Miami, however, struggled to make a mark in the MLS after winning the Leagues Cup. The Herons, without the presence of Lionel Messi, look vulnerable and would love to make a few younger and quality signings.
